Extract Pliny came out with low sg - do something wrong?

Just an update... the beer tastes great. I decided to try my first 10gl batch with the same recipe. I double the recipe and added three pounds of additional extract. Same results, low SG. this time I think it's because I didnt boil off twice as much as the 5gl batch as I had expected. So I...

Extract Pliny came out with low sg - do something wrong?

I added the second set of dry hops yesterday. Sampled the beer and it's still at 1.01. Smells and tastes great. Second set is supposed to go till Monday. I was gonna keg next monday night, chill it all night, carb in the morning, and serve tuesday night. Problem is, the temp has been...

Extract Pliny came out with low sg - do something wrong?

Sorry, I meant LME, not DME. But now that I mentioned it, would DME be better than LME for some reason? The sample was at 70° when I took the reading. By the way, at 12 hours, there were no bubbles but deffinately a pressure differential in the airlock. Now, 22 hours in, and it's bubbling...

Extract Pliny came out with low sg - do something wrong?

I did a full 8 gallon boil. I didn't measure the volume after the boil but it looks to be around 5 gallons. Hard to tell in my 15 GL fermenter. I did not use any top off water. Should i add another can of dme or more dextrose next time?

Extract Pliny came out with low sg - do something wrong?

I followed the extract version of this: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/attachments/0000/6351/doubleIPA.pdf Used 8 gallons of water and a 90 minute boil as instructed. SG came out 1.056. How the heck am I that far off?

I'll give that a try. I think I'm gonna try a Pliny clone.

For those who say an air tight seal on your fermenter is unnecesary, is it ok to peek

Well I finally got a good seal on my fermenter and subsequently brewed my first beer with no acetydehyde. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'll keep doing what works. I also did a few other things differently such as using a stone and oxygen tank to aerate when I pitched. Possibly just got the yeast...

dumping trub on an IPA - too soon?

The owner of MiniBrew, the company that makes the plastic conicals, suggested that I dump trub from the bottom valve just prior to pitching. I did this on an IPA and, surpisingly, did actually get some of the junk out. I didn't think it had sat long enough to separate but I guess it did...

Trub ball for dumping trub from conical?

Anyone know where I can find one of these: Looks like a cool device to prevent loosing too much beer.

For those who say an air tight seal on your fermenter is unnecesary, is it ok to peek

Sorry... typo. I had it right towards the end of the post, just typed incorrectly. It's fixed now. I peaked a couple times mainly to see if the krausen had fallen and also to take a good whiff to check for off scents like acetaldehyde. I'd hate to be actually causing off flavors by ozidizing...

For those who say an air tight seal on your fermenter is unnecesary, is it ok to peek

I've heard a alot of people say this. Since the beer will produce co2 which is denser than o2, and keep a blanket over the beer.... blah, blah blah (I'll leave the validity of that argument to the threads that already exist). My question is to those who believe this to be true, is it bad to...

    Another acetaldehyde question

I'm thinking about getting a good seal, then purging it with co2 prior to placing the air lock for my next fermentation. i can take out the thermometer, since it's above the wort anyways, add a valve, purge with co2, and close the valve. I'm also going to get one of those co2 aerating stones...

    Another acetaldehyde question

I brewed my first extract batch, a nut brown, using Nottingham yeast. Fermented around 70°. I fermented the 5 gallon bactch in a 15 gallon conical. I LHBS said when the airlock bubbles slow to a bubble per minute, transfer to secondary for another week, keg, chill, carb, shake, settle for a...

Another plastic tasting beer line thread

Just replaced my old keg lines with some stuff I bought from the local home brew store. The taste is awful on the first 4 ounces or so. It's okay after that but if it sits for a few minutes, the next beer is already tasting and smelling like plastic. I will admit that I did not soak the lines...
