    Whooops... sanitization + cider question

A few weeks ago I bottled my lovingly prepared, 6 gallon batch of cider made from orchard pressed, unpasteurized cider. I racked it oh so carefully to my bottling bucket, smacked the lid on it and carried to my sanitized kitchen. I got all my sanitized implements together, got everything ready...

    Whooops... sanitization + cider question

Since you usually start with tap water to mix up a batch of Star San, my guess is that rinsing it with tap water would have just made a really dilute solution that you swished around. Being that you're already fermenting, there's probably not much you can do about it now anyway, so just relax...

    Flavored cider help

After receiving some advice from a friend of mine, I started doing my flavoring by taking the ingredients I want to flavor with and simmering them on the stove top to draw out the aromatics and flavors. It's worked well for me so far. My last batch I simmered in apple juice concentrate and...

    Larger container for cider

My apologies. I had been reading a lot of posts about people doing 1 gallon batches, then your comment about drinking half the batch in short order, and asking about half gallon containers... I must have put 2 and 2 together and got 1 gallon... my bad.

    Cloudy secondary.

Did you have any temperature changes or add anything to it? It almost looks like the yeast kicked off again... or something else is growing in there. Any chance you forgot to sanitize something?

    Larger container for cider

I like the 1 liter bottles with the ez caps. I also really like the 22oz, 360 Vodka bottles. Not trying to be critical, but if your doing 1 gallon batches, is it really THAT much of a nuisance to do 4 bottles instead of 2? Of course, I really enjoy bottling day... the more complexity the...

    Question about lees in secondary

Here's another thought... what are you bottling to? If you're cooking up a gallon, that's 128oz, or 10.75 x 12oz bottles. You could just bottle 10 bottles clean and pour yourself a glass of the last 6 - 8 oz. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who will torture himself trying to get the...

    Question about lees in secondary

I'm still new at this myself, but yes to this statement. I'm a big fan of the bottling bucket, and if you rack really carefully with judicious use of an autosiphon you can get almost everything in the jug without sucking up lees, or stop them before they reach your bucket. You could also top...

    Larger container for cider

My local homebrew supply store has growlers in many sizes, including half gallon. I assume you should be able to pick up or order such a thing with fair ease.

Finally! Paradise Lost is finished... Well, nearly so...

Warmed them in the sink, then into 180 degree water on stovetop for 10 minutes. No direct heat. I was able to do them 8 at a time, so the whole operation took less than 2 hours.

Finally! Paradise Lost is finished... Well, nearly so...

5 gallons sat in secondary in a carboy for a month. I split them on bottling day. the mystery gallon is still resting on those spent cinnamon sticks. I was going to let it go a month before bottling it dry, but now I'm starting to think about racking half of it to a small, oak bourbon barrel...

Finally! Paradise Lost is finished... Well, nearly so...

My third batch of cider is finally complete! Here’s how it went… I started with 6 gallons of Fresh, unpasteurized cider from a local orchard (thank you Sound Homebrew Supply!). Added Potassium Metabisulfite to stop things from going wild and waited 24 hours. I drew off 2 cups of the cider...

    Carbonation Troubles

I bottled at 1.000. OG was 1.055. I added enough sugar to sweeten and a bit more for carbonation with the intent to monitor the carbonation carefully and bottle pasteurize once the ideal level of carbonation was reached. I'll have to sacrifice a bottle tonight to re-check the gravity. More...

    Carbonation Troubles

I saw your post after I bottled. It's definitely on my list of things to do for next time!

    Carbonation Troubles

Not the trouble I was expecting to have... I let my 5 gallons of cider rest in secondary for a solid month... looked beautiful! I wanted a slightly sweet, carbonated cider, so I split the batch in half to play with flavors a bit, primed in two different ways and bottled. I used plenty enough...

How many gallons of cider in 2017

    I'm almost ready to bottle my third batch. That's 18 gallons for me! 1295 + 18 = 1,313

    Cider + Whiskey

If it was me... and my experience is not as extensive as many here... I'd pour a pint glass of a cider I like and start adding the whiskey a teaspoon at a time until I get the flavor I want. Then, I'd scale up to my 2.5 gallons and add that amount at bottling time. As said, possibly hit or...

Re-rack, bottle early, or leave it alone?

Thanks very much for the perspective. This is the best original product I've used so far. Very excited about the prospects and just don't want to take any chances.
