    Serving Etiquette

Geeze I must be the only guy here who likes his beer cold! IPA, Red ales, porters, scotch ales, hefe's, belgian trippels, etc. I drink them all below 40º. My fridge is 37 and thats how I like my beer. Yes I like good beer. I don't really drink BMC much at all, can't remember the last time I...

    Tasting too early?

One note for you kinda off the path of how this thread is progressing. After your beer is in the bottle for a week, the yeast are workin hard to carbonate your beer, and they will provide a different flavor than right out of secondary, which is when they're mostly dormant becuase they're...

    Bad Cider

I can tell you from experience that the apfelwein is great. I thought 5 gallons was going to be PLENTY. I'm getting ready to make another batch here before too long :)

    Sanitize Bottle Caps?

for all my batches I've soaked them in sanitizer until I need them, 5ish minutes plus.

    1st Partial Mash (who knew?!!)

okie dokie! congrats on your first PM. Sounds a bit like mine, which is, to date, the only batch I've ever dumped. The burned bottom of the bag, with the grains, was that in your brew kettle? I wasn't clear which vessle you sparged into, I presume the one with the grain stuff at the bottom...

    Hefeweizen question

A Hydrometer should tell you if its done fermenting, lack of krausen is a good sign, but not the end-all-be-all signal that its done. Hefe's are known for vigorous fermentation, so if you feed it, and its not already done with what its doing, you might be making bottle bomb.s

    Slept through fermentation

What temp was it at? Loss of krausen overnight seems a little premature, at least for the beers I've made.

First time, no sanitizer, pee'd on it...

LOL! I love how this went from "Is pee a cleaner" to "yeah but you won't die from a dirty bathroom" And yeah... I clean my toilet, or rather swmbo does :)
  11. Rook

    Will this work?

I'm with orfy. For pretty cheap you can build a mash tun with a stainless braid as a grain filter, PM is a pretty nice way to make beer. :)

First time, no sanitizer, pee'd on it...

If pee was a great cleaner, you would never, ever, need to clean a urinal.

What's the best beer you have brewed to date?

I copied the bird's Murder in the Red Barn. Its so far the best beer I've brewed to date. My Manny's pale ale is #2 and my leftover IPA is #3.

    starting to do partial mash's

5 gallon MLT is more than enough for partial mashes. I think that in order to build a quality grainbed on the bottom of the tun that you're going to need to probably mash minimum of 8lbs of grains, which is a good size. I only got a 3gal MLT and I can't seem to fit more than about 5lbs of grains...

    Disappointment in a local brewery....

I'm blessed to live in the PacificNW, and that means that there are breweries all over the place near where I live. The more popular Craft Breweries (Pyramid, Redhook) are decent, some of the smaller ones (Boundary Bay, Diamond Knot) make phenomenal beer, and some of the locally popular ones...

First AG went awry in the secondary

My Manny's clone had white chunks floating in the bottles after a week. I though the whole batch was ruined. After a couple weeks settled out, and the beer is fantastic!

Is it time for me to try partial mash brewing?

Evan, you bring up the cost aspect, and you're right. I had neglected that in my post. I basically refuse to use LME at this point, DME is better for me in almost every way (except that powder has some really goofy properties)

    Malted Barley Question

I'm a little confused. All barely that you can mash is malted barley. Thats why the extract you buy is called "malt extract"
