The Finer Points of Kegging? How Long to Condition Beer in-Keg

I kegged my first beer about 4-5 weeks ago (done about a dozen batches in bottles), it took a while to get good, even after force carbonation, I'd say it just recently 'came into its own' flavor wise. was pretty thin tasting there for a while.

How full should you fill a 6.5G carboy?

I've got a 5 gallon batch in a 5 gallon carboy, and its blowing off like a mother-effer right now. Big mess (good thing I ferment in an extra shower) and I know I'm losing a bit of my beer, I might end up with 4-4.5 gallons when all is said and done, after the amount of blowoff I'm having. I'd...

Orange Peel in a Mac and Jacks Clone

bullrider 4, I followed the recipe exactly as the magazine had it, but I don't remember what yeast the magazine recommended, its been a while and I don't know where the magazine is right now. If this the magazine you're using, then yes, I followed it 100%

    High grapefruit taste IPA

kdsarch, you wouldn't happen to be referring to Diamond Knot's IPA would you? That is a big glass of grapefruity awesomeness.

dry hops to destroy my delicious creation?

Heck, you might have discovered something pretty neat tasting. If you have any extra hops, you might toss some in a little while before bottling, just to get that extra aroma, since the active fermentation has likely killed any aroma that you had, however, the taste will still be effected...

Oops! -or- Mistakes you made when you knew better.

I brewed up my first partial mash of the new house and I'm fermenting in a carboy. I've never done primary fermentation in a carboy. I usually use my bottling bucket, but I thought what the heck. Now I remember WHY I don't ferment in carboys. There really isn't enough headspace in a 5 gallon...

Orange Peel in a Mac and Jacks Clone

I've done a mack and jack's clone that wasn't all that good, it was a fine beer but didn't taste like Mac & jacks. I got it out of the "BREW" magazine's 100 clone recipe issue. It did have the fruity aroma that you're thinking of, but I'm 99% sure its from cascade hops and the right yeast and...

I say go for it, what do you have to lose?

Is it normal for secondary to have negative pressure?

Vodka won't let any nasties grow in it, plus if you get enough suckback that the liquid gets into the beer, you've just upped your ABV with zero chance of contamination. water won't do that for yah.

    Back from Seattle Area

Hey all. Sortof a re-introduction here. I've been brewing for 2 years or so, but I took about a year off and just started back up. I had to take time off becuase we were selling our last place, and houses don't sell very well if there's beer fermenting all over the place. Happy to say my new...

    Carb Problem?

I've yet to bottle a beer that was drinkable in less than 3 weeks. Bottle conditioning needs time to ferment again for carbonation, then the yeast need to settle down and the beer needs time to condition. Being 4 days in, you're smack dab in the middle of the yeast eating that bottling sugar...

    Dry Hopping "Gunk"

Its A-OK to have gunk in the bottles. I've had white stuff floating around in bottles, the important thing is to let the bottles condition in peace for a few weeks and then look at them. Remember that once you bottle them, you're waking up the yeast again to do some more fermentation for...

How long to stir before pitching

I usually stir like mad for about 5 minutes while cooling the wort down with the cooling coil. The stirring brings the wort down to temps within about 5 minutes, as soon as its at temp (70 usually) I transfer to my vessel and pitch. I frequently have fermentation starting pretty quickly, and...

    Brass fittings on Mash Tun?

Hey guys, I'm brewing up an IPA this weekend and I've noticed that the brass valve and fittings that I have on my MLT have some corrosion on them, like they're tarnished. Has anyone had instances of this causing off flavors in beer? I'm wondering if I should upgrade to Stainless before saturday....

    Kegging 101 Questions

got to agree with underwaterdan. This thread has been the quickest most concise instructions for kegging. I'm currently drinking my first kegged beer, a bitter, off of these instructions. carbed A-OK after 48 hrs. Room temp + 30psi into the fridge and sit for 2 days. Bueno!

    Show us your Kegerator

Its Chopper's Red Ale on tap (SO GOOD) My homebrew kegs are getting delivered tomorrow, so I'll get a couple more going here pretty soon. :) Also, while I got everything from micromatic, its not a kit so much as a conglomeration of a bunch of their parts. I upgraded almost everything, Faucets...

    Show us your Kegerator

Got mine built this weekend, no homebrew in it yet (kegs will get here on in 4 days and I'll get them filled here pretty soon). I have the ability to swap out for homebrew or sanke style kegs whenever I want. :)

Apple Juice on top of Trub in Primary

Don't be too hard on him, I think he probably could have been a little bit more concise on his question, but i read the gist of his question as; "I experimented, by doing: this. Any thoughts?" I think really the main answer is: "Wait and see." I will say that lots of 'accidents' have resulted...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Mr. Nice Guy. I did mine for over 6 months, it got VERY smooth and VERY tasty. SWMBO made me start 2 more batches since that growler that I had was the very last of the first batch. Now I've got 2 batches going. 1 with 5 gallons of TreeTop, and 1 with 4 gallons of Langers, 1 gallon of...
