    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Does anyone know if Fast Ferment is planning to switch to the new seal on their new fermenters? I'd think that correcting a known defect in their product would be a high priority.

    Basement Electric Brewery Under Construction

I'm not worried about ventilation problems. The 36" vent hood I bought goes as high as 760 CFM. I'm hoping I can use it on a medium setting so it won't be too loud but it won't hurt to have the extra power if I need to clear the air.

    Brew Boss Systems

Glad to hear that the efficiency was that high. I got my BrewBoss last week but haven't used it yet. I'm in the beginning stages of building a dedicated brewing room in my basement so I haven't been able to do the wet run yet. (Just got the 240v 30 amp circuit finished yesterday.) Here's a link...

    Basement Electric Brewery Under Construction

Work has begun on my basement brewery. I have a 10x11 foot room that will be dedicated to brewing beer and mead. Roughout electrical work is underway. All wiring has been pulled. I got my 240v 30 amp GFCI breaker installed today and work on the outlets is in progress. Once the electrical work...

    Aeration Stone

If it were me I'd boil the stone for 10 minutes and then blow some air through it to ensure that the crude has been cleared from the pores. That should take care of any nasty growths on the stone. In the future, make sure to always thoroughly clean the stone before you quit for the day.

    Brew Boss Systems

I got the sight glass and whirlpool options also. :mug: I've never used Beersmith but am about to get it. Good to know there are others on the forum who will be brewing with Brew Boss and use Beersmith if I need any help in setting up the equipment profile. Cheers!

    Brew Boss Systems

I just ordered a 15 gallon system with the COFI option. Can't wait to get started with the new system!

    Does trub affect hydrometer reading?

I've always pulled my sample from above the separation line so I can't speak from experience as to how much the trub influences the hydrometer reading. I suspect it won't make a big difference but it could be a point or two.

    Does trub affect hydrometer reading?

http://publications.iodp.org/proceedings/308/205/205_4.htm Simply put, suspended particles will raise hydrometer readings. It's just basic physics. Don't focus on coarse sand particles that settle out very quickly. Instead think about fine particles, like trub, that settle out slowly.

    Gravity math

Be aware that temperature also influences hydrometer readings. If you are measuring hot wort then you need to apply a temperature correction to your reading. Most hydrometers are calibrated for room temperature (72 degrees). Taking a reading in very warm or hot wort will give you an artificially...

    Does trub affect hydrometer reading?

If the sand is suspended it will elevate the hydrometer reading. I'm a soil scientist and we use hydrometers to measure the percentage of sand, silt, and clay in soil samples. By taking readings at different time intervals we can calculate the volume of particles that are still suspended. If you...

    Does trub affect hydrometer reading?

Hydrometers measure the density of the liquid that they are suspended in. The density is affected by the amount of total dissolved solids (sugars, etc.) as well as the amount of total suspended solids (trub). As an experiment, use a beer thief to grab samples above and below the trub...

    Basement brew room

Indoor propane use is a bad idea. If you run the calculations to estimate the volume of air that needs to be exchanged in order to do it safely, you will also find that it is prohibitively expensive and just not practical. If you have access to natural gas that is a much better option.

Brew Boss for a brewer in a wheelchair

I'm thinking of using a ratcheting pulley on a swing arm. They make electric models that might make things easier for you.

The New Brew Shed aka The Lady Cave

NC regulations will require the sink to be hooked up to a permitted wastewater system. The shed will also require a building permit since there will be electricity in it. Of course what the county doesn't know about...

The New Brew Shed aka The Lady Cave

I'll be following your progress. I like what you are doing. I'm about to start construction on a dedicated brewing room in my basement and like to see what others have done for inspiration. Best of luck!

Thinking about switching to e-BIAB with Brew-Boss

I can't answer your question about Beersmith but it's my understanding that the Brew Boss software is totally flexible as far as setting up your brew schedule. You should be able to set your times and mash temperatures based on what you are brewing. If you use their optional hops boss attachment...
