Amazon Echo Dot: What the heck to do with it?

I toyed around with getting one of these things for Xmas but came to the conclusion that I wouldn't find much to do with it either. Why shout across the room for a google answer if you always have your phone on you? "Wake up Moto, give me uses for an echo dot....." I can't wait to start...

    Electric Mash Tun Rake/Stirrer (video)

I'm thinking this just might work! The motor is an electric car window motor, so it is high torque. I don't think I'll want to run it continuously since it gets quite warm, but the intent is to only use it intermittently to mix the mash up and keep the temperature equalized. I've been...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Ah, there are some smarts within the probes to identify them uniquely to the controller..... I get it. That's a lot of hardware you have hooked up there! I'm looking at building myself a mash rake (high torque, low RPM motor) to mount on top of my tun. That, combined with my HERMS coil and...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Thanks for that. I can't get my head around just how RPi knows which temp probe is which when they are all connected to the same input however....

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

OK, more playing... The car icon is to turn on a particular vessel. The dummy thermometers must be chosen at setup, not afterwards. I am now working on the programmable step functions to answer my other questions (now that I have dummy thermometers working). I still would like...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

I just loaded this up on pi yesterday and have it running. Considering I'm an absolute neophyte with this pi/programming stuff, I'm happy with my progress so far.... A few questions though since the documentation isn't completed yet. What does the car icon mean/do under each vessel? Is...

    Brewers logbook?

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Wild Pecan Porter

The jury is in. It took a while for the pecan flavors to develop, but now that they have, it is very nice indeed. Very drinkable. The head certainly has pecan aroma/taste and the aftertaste is definitely one of pecan. It isn't a 'heavy' beer; in fact I think it could use a bit more body to...

Winter Seasonal Beer Holly (Christmas Ale)

Used the OP's recipe and it is very nice indeed. One corny is on its way to surprise a wife, the other corny is in my keezer to be consumed over the holidays. Ginger forward, but not obnoxiously so. Very similar to Karbach's 'Yule shoot y'er eye out' Winter Warmer.

    Dogs

This is Lucy and Charlie Brown. We were at Flying Heart brewery earlier this year and took these pictures. These two actually have their own blog! http://www.twobrewdogs.com where we chronicle our brewery visits as we roam around the country in our RV. Check it out and give us a Like on our...

Winter Seasonal Beer Holly (Christmas Ale)

Brewed up 10 gallons of this (per OP's first post recipe) on 11/30. OG was 1.088 and now, 6 days later, is around 1.024 and still going.... so about 8.25% ABV right now, 72% attenuation so far. This most certainly is one of the longer, more continuous fermentations I've ever had. Usually...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

That's OK fine with me. I wonder if the multipoint calibration will eliminate this problem though. I could simply 'correct' it to bring it in line with the hydrometer. I don't know the logic their calibration employs. Clarification from them would be great.

temp for conditioning and Nitro questions

You cannot use a CO2 tank for nitrogen. CO2 has a male fitting, nitro a female. Nitro tanks are also pressurized to much greater levels and it's never a liquid in the tank. That said, GET ONE!!!!! I'm enjoying my Guinness clone on nitro as we speak. I just ordered another tap so that I...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

I performed an experiment today. Using a jar of water and adding sugar to it, I compared my glass hydrometer, the TILT and my cheap Chinese refractometer at progressively higher sugar concentrations. I held the temp constant (OK, maybe +/- 1*) until the last couple of readings when I warmed it...

Just way overshot my mash temp

Keep some amylase enzyme on hand for instances just as this. Available from your local home brew shop. Cool back to the appropriate temp and throw a little in to replace that which was denatured... Brew on.

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

It's all open source code, right? For those of you that know what to do, go for it!!!!!!!!!! Or does what you say need hardware changes?

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

The website says it has a range of 32* to 135* F. Given that you or I can correct the reading of a 'normal' hydrometer based on the temperature of the wort, I assume the Tilt can as well since it is also taking that reading. The fermentation has been event free since this strange issue...

    Simplest (?) Keggle Cutting Jig

I would counsel anyone considering using kegs to cut the BOTTOMS, not the tops. Having a bottom drain in place is very nice and gives you a lot of configuration flexibility. Cleaning in place is easy, mash tuns drain every drop (without having to pull hard with a pump) and it's one less...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

The temperature decrease is purely due to the ferm cabinet. I loaded the corny at about 95* (water still is kind of warm here in Houston) and sealed it up with the Tilt in it. I then put it in the ferm cabinet and let it cool down. Since the corny has been sanitized and has minimal head...
