Metallic taste on finish of my stout

Just a thought... In my all SS setup I just made a SMASH, Maris Otter and (the culprit I think) Magnum hops. I foolishly used them as bittering and flavor hops. I think the high alpha, but not floral/citrus/piney hops, if used late in the boil may be a culprit in producing an off flavor that...

    "Off Aroma" across multiple beers

Unless I missed it.... how long and how hard are you boiling your wort?

What are your contrarian/"unpopular" beer opinions?

Founders is highly overrated $10 snifters are bull$()t I don't want coffee in my beer If my IPA makes my eyes bleed there is a problem Left Hand's Milk Stout is nectar from Heaven Brett, when done right, makes a beer worship worthy Any brewery that doesn't welcome dogs isn't worth squat...

    Oxygenate in a conical?

I currently do both 5 and 10 gallon batches by fermenting in cornies, blowing off into a bottle. This last batch got a bit of an oxygen kick by pumping from the out to the in using a little Chinese pump and having it go through a Tee with an aeration stone in it. This is connected to my...

    Brewing mid ocean

Try just taking bottles of your favorite brews with you and replenish in port. No water to worry about, no equipment, no grain, no hops/yeast to refrigerate, no flames................. some hobbies aren't transportable. ping pong in space...

Multiple test batches split from one base mash?

You don't need to include the small amount of base malt. Your LHBS has little bottles of amylase enzyme that will do the job nicely.

Multiple test batches split from one base mash?

If you don't sparge, your conversion will continue. Not a bad thing if you are aiming for very fermentable, but not optimal if aiming for body. What about mashing the specialties separately using some added amylase and then adding them to the desired base mash (at its desired conversion state)?

Belgian Blond Ale Revvy's Belgian Blonde (Leffe Clone)

I built a pump driven carbonator are carbed these guys up today. AWESOME!! Both very drinkable. The difference in taste between the two of them has diminished other than the very noticeable fruity finish with the Danstar. The M27 is drier, more alcoholic and less complex in its flavors. It...

I just built an inline carbonator, it works great!

What oxygen? It's a closed system with your keg. If you have oxygen in your head space, that means you didn't burp it or purge it in any case, so all you are doing is speeding up the oxidation you would get anyway. If you DID purge your keg, you are not introducing any new oxygen. For...

I just built an inline carbonator, it works great!

I built this just this morning with one of the little brown Chinese pumps that others on this forum have used for recirculation. I currently have it working on a keg of Leffe clone I made. Very obvious to see the bubbles in the outlet and not on the inlet. I find it helps to burp the keg...

Belgian Blond Ale Revvy's Belgian Blonde (Leffe Clone)

The uncarbonated tastes/numbers are in....wow. With Lallemand Danstar Abbaye yeast, the FG was 1.011 and the Belgian funky taste finished with a nice fruitiness. The M27 Mangrove Jack ended at an incredible 1.002 and was, understandably, much drier and a bit 'hot'. Both of these fermented...

    New INTERTAP Faucets...beyond frustrated

It sounds like you need to check/replace the oring that seats your diptube. If this gets cracked or worn out, gas from the headspace of your keg will leak around it and mingle with the beer flowing out the line, foaming it.

I just built an inline carbonator, it works great!

Nice. I see great utility in using it to oxygenate wort prior to pitching yeast as well. Since I ferment in a corny I could use the exact same setup connected to oxygen instead of CO2. I normally don't leave a dip tube in the keg while it ferments, but I could put a short one in so that it...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Thanks for the help Ph03.. I will delete the file. I've also been to the Github and looked at the PWM code. It looks like reasonable logic from what I can decipher. How do I actuallyget that code onto my pi? Is there a command I can issue from my end that will (like a sudo git pull)...

what do you use to Clean in Place - HERMS coil ?

My coil is in my HLT and I have a separate BK, but still clean the inside of my coil. I use warm oxyclean. I figure that if a good detergent/hot water doesn't remove the gunk, then the gunk won't be removed when brewing beer either. As long as you boil, you are killing bad guys...... the rest...

Belgian Blond Ale Revvy's Belgian Blonde (Leffe Clone)

8 days since pitch. 1.088 - 1.012 or 7.09% ABV, subject to confirmation with hydrometer, not my Tilt. I'll be transferring to clean kegs later today and crashing I think. I split this into 5 gal with M27 Mangrove Jack (replaced by M47?) Belgian Abbey yeast and 5 gal with Danstar Abbey yeast...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Wet run today. Not bad. My temp logging isn't working though. Suggestions? I'd love to see some more detailed documentation on the various temp control algorithms and would really appreciate a step by step on how to include the %duty algorithm code. Thanks!

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Yea, without % duty for boiling purposes you still need something other than CBP in my opinion. Boiling a la PID style results in either too hard of a boil or insufficient. Tough to get right. While I'm not a programmer by ANY stretch of the imagination, I gotta believe duty % cycle is very...

Control Panel: PIDs and Switches, or one large touch LCD?

I currently run a 50 amp, 1 PID (switched between HLT or BK) HERMS system and have no problems. I never do back to backs and therefore don't need both elements on. Even with this configuration I have accidentally dry fired a kettle because I forgot to switch the selector. As a result, I have...

Am I missing something or is it a no brainer for one of the choices to be % duty cycle instead of setting a target temp?
