    hop pellets?

I am relatively new to brewing, having only six brews under my belt. My first five, I just tossed the pellets right into the brew. I got a wild hair up my a** and decided to use a muslin bag for my last brew, which is still in the secondary right now. It had less trub when racking to secondary...

    Scottish Wee Heavy

It has been in the bottles just under a week and my impatience overcame me :D so I put one in the fridge.... waited a couple hours and popped one open... the flavor is awesome... slightly smokey, but not too smokey... and a bit bitter, but bitter in a very good way... the only problem is that I...

    Dry Hopping with Pellets???

OK so I decided to just toss the hop pellets into the beer at secondary. I used 1oz cascade for this and boy did they make a mess when I added the beer to them. But it sure does give the beer a nice aroma. :cross: I am hoping that the hops will settle out after a week or two.

    Dry Hopping with Pellets???

Thanks for the replies... I think I will just toss in next week when I rack to secondary. I only have one glass carboy, so if I wanted to rack again, I would have to re-rack into the same carboy. I think I might just let settle a little longer so that the hop trub settles out. By the way...

    carbonation problems?

I just finished off my last bottle of my Fat Tire Clone that had been left in the secondary for three weeks exactly. I had no problem with the carbonation. If I remember correctly, they were pretty much fully carbed at two weeks.

    Dry Hopping with Pellets???

I just brewed this SNPA clone recipe from BYO yesterday: • 8 oz. caramel malt, 30° Lovibond • 6 oz. DeWolf-Cosyns cara-pils malt • 6 lbs. light malt syrup • 1.5 oz. Perle hops (8.2% alpha acid) for 60 min. • 2.5 oz. Cascade hops (5.4% alpha acid): 1 oz. for 15 min., 1 oz. for 5 min., 0.5...

    Scottish Wee Heavy

I brewed it today and all went well. I even hit the OG right on the head 1.079. I added a little more of the aroma hops... about 3/8oz of each instead of 1/4 because they smelled so good in the wort. :p My only question deals with the leftover LME. Since they came in 3.5 lbs cans, I only used...

What type of wort chiller do you use?

In my experiences the ice bath only helps cool roughly 5 minutes faster. So yeah not too much faster I guess. Just a few bucks for a few bags of ice.

What type of wort chiller do you use?

I use an immersion chiller and an ice bath. I fill a 10 gallon Rubbermaid tub with cold water and 2 bags of ice and put the brew kettle in that with the immersion chiller. Cools off pretty quickly... roughly 15 or 20 minutes to 65F.

    Scottish Wee Heavy

This is what I am going to use as the final recipe... ( A few changes from El P's posting) I ordered the ingredients from today: 11 oz. Torrified Wheat 9 oz. 60°L Crystal Malt 2 oz. British Roasted Barley 1 oz. Peated Malt 6.00 lb. Muntons Light DME 1.75 lb. John Bull Light LME 1.75...

    Scottish Wee Heavy

Thanks for the help El P, I will be ordering the ingredients tomorrow from NorthernBrewer.com tomorrow. I am going to use the Edinburgh Ale Yeast and the only other change I will be making is using NB Malt Syrup and NB Amber Malt Syrup instead of the Alexander's and making the Invert Sugar as...

    Scottish Wee Heavy

Thanks El Pistolero, This recipe sounds very tasty... :p I have a few questions to go along with it. First, can I substitute Belgian Candi Sugar for the invert sugar or are they not at all the same thing. If not, where can I get invert sugar from? Second, how do you think that using the...

    Scottish Wee Heavy

Thanks, Pumbaa, I will look into doing something like the one you posted, with a few changes. I am gonna wait to see what El Pistolero posts and go from there. I will post the recipe when I decide on one to get some feedback! :mug:

    Scottish Wee Heavy

I am looking for a good Scottish Wee Heavy recipe to brew within the next few weeks. I absolutely love this board for the help and discussions about everything. Since I am still relatively new to brewing I need an extract recipe and/or partial mash. Thanks in advance for the help!!! :D

    Dutch Extra Light Malt Extract

Thanks for the help Walker, I think that you may be right and this is probably done fermenting. I think that I am going to let her sit until this weekend just in case, besides it wont hurt it anyways. I will let you know how it goes after bottling and clarification.

    Dutch Extra Light Malt Extract

Ok now my brew has been in the secondary for 2 weeks and Gravity reading is still around 1.030 and temp maintained between 75 and 78 throughout fermentation. (Stared out at 1.062) I tried rousing yeast by shaking in carboy but didn't seem to do too much. I am thinking that this might not ferment...

    Dutch Extra Light Malt Extract

The temp has been between 75 and 78 for the entire fermentation. You may be right about the Laaglanders. In fact some research proved that it also is high in unfermentables like the Dutch DME is supposed to be. Maybe I am just being impatient with this brew. Does it sound unreasonable to...

    Dutch Extra Light Malt Extract

I recently brewed a Fat Tire clone recipe that came from BYO. Instead of using the Laaglander plain extra-light DME I used a Dutch Extra Light Malt Extract. My question deals with the Dutch Extract and gravity readings. I have heard that it may leave a sweeter and maltier flavor in the beer...

    Carbonation Levels

That is kind of what I was thinking because all of the 12 oz bottles carbonation levels are the same and all of the flip-tops are the same. I will wait to see if the carbonation levels of the bigger bottles evens out with more time. The conditioning temp was between 63 and 67. Thanks for...

    Carbonation Levels

First of all I want to say thanks to everyone here in this forum. I am new to Homebrewing. :D I have my 3rd brew in the primary fermenter right now. This is also my first post in the forum. I would have posted earlier, but I did not need to because all I had to do was perform a search and my...
