3rd Brew day First All Grain

what was your target og? bjcp states american pale ale should be 1.056 – 1.075 so you're actually a little low by their standards. i like your mash method, though, i don't see any problems with it, (though i'm a nube to all-grain, too).

    Beersmith Mash In Low?

Hello all, I'm trying to figure my third all grain batch using Beersmith. It seems as though all three times I've entered my ingredients, the mash in volume of water seems really low. I'm using a chest cooler with manifold, single infusion. If beersmith is recommending a pre-boil volume of...

    fermentation trouble?

your guy is the ultimate salesman. most of the extract kits i've brewed came w/muntons and i've never had a problam. your fermentation sounds about right. i'm a nube too, but i've probably brewed about six extract batches with muntons with similar fermentation and the beer turned out great!

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

i know, i was just kidding. i appreciate the feedback. i took the majority of poster's advice: bottled the stink, drank a beer, and brewed another batch. will wait a few weeks and see what i have.

Pliny the Elder v. Miller High Life

me too brother, but i don't know if i'd bother to review it in such depth on beeradvocate. to those who aren't following the thread, i'm really not looking for a miller high life clone, and i've never had a pliny the elder. i just thought the review was funny.

    Sos! Time sensitive mash emergency

I took rjwhite's advice and manned up, stuck my arm in there! I can be reached at st. james hospital burn unit room 203. can someone please stop by my house, check my primary and see if my beer's fermenting??? Actually, I was able to tip the cooler enough to get my hand on the manifold and...

    Sos! Time sensitive mash emergency

i'm doing an all grain batch in a square coleman cooler with a loose-fitted manifold. i'm halfway through the mash, went to stir, and i dislodged the manifold from the bulkhead that passes through the cooler wall. The water is 156f, it's too hot to reach down there and reattach it. WHAT DO I DO?

Pliny the Elder v. Miller High Life

this isn't my review, folks, i just saw it on beeradvocate last night and got a kick out of it. i'm not trolling and i don't think this guy is either. he has two other reviews on the site: magic hat #9 "on a cold winter day, snuggled up on the couch with a blanket, I would drink more of...

Pliny the Elder v. Miller High Life

I was trying to understand the hype behind "Pliny the Elder" and "Miller High Life" on this forum, so I could decide on my next clone brew. After clawing through hundreds of reviews of both, I found the best (and most insightful) review at brewadvocate: Let it be known that I am a novice...

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

i don't snort Co2, and what if i did. don't judge, we all have our hangups. the stink went beyond that. i poored my beer from the gravity reading into a wine glass, swirled it around, and snorted it for a long time. it still smelled.

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

its a northern brewer kit (but remember i didn't really hit the temps shown below): MASH INGREDIENTS -- 7.5 lbs. Rahr 2-Row Pale -- 0.75 lbs. Belgian Caramel Pils -- 0.25 lbs. Briess Special Roast -- 0.125 lbs. Belgian Biscuit malt -- 0.125 lbs. Simpsons Chocolate -- 1 oz. Willamette...

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

no, not sour, rocketman. by the way, after three days of no bubbling, i took a gravity reading then another two days later, gravity was stable so i bottled, you think still too soon? i was anxious to bottle because i was curious to see how badly i screwed it up after a crappy brew day.

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

malfet: its not burnt acrid or chemical acrid, but i'm not sure i'd call it decay acrid, either. maybe "urine acrid", if anything, YUMMY! wierdboy: it tastes fine to me (not like urine), if not a little watery

1st All Grain Batch: What the $%&* Did I do?

I dove into my first all grain batch (Irish Red Ale) ten days ago. When I transferred to the bottling bucket yesterday the beer had a smell I can only describe as acrid. I've checked the "wheel of smells" or whatever its called but I can't find an odor that it reminds me of. Here's what I...

Mash Tun Manifold: Cut Slots or Drill Holes?

thx for the help! i'm going to make two varieties (one with holes, one with slots) and try them both since my manifold is just loose fit. i've gotten distracted now by the bulkhead through the cooler drain. i have the guys at lowe's w/smoke coming out their ears. i'll post pics when i'm done...

Mash Tun Manifold: Cut Slots or Drill Holes?

I'm retrofitting a coleman cooler for my mash tun. Please let me just drill holes in my CPVC manifold, I really don't feel like pulling out the hacksaw. What are the pros and cons? Also, if holes are okay, what size? Also, should I drill holes (or cut slots) on the shorter cross pieces? I...
