    Unable to boil wort?

Same thing happened with me, took forever to achieve a vigorous boil with 3 gallons of wort but it was extremely hot, easily in the high 90C. I have a large halogen hob on my electric stove that is never normally used so I though I would use it. I added my bittering hops ate this stage and...

My first attempt at homebrew - Mr Beer

http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator/carbonation.html This is a really good website to determine the amount of priming sugar you need, be it dried extract, corn sugar, cane sugar, or honey. I've never primed with dme before, but for the next batch I will be. I have found corn sugar...

    Appeal of homebrew

Right, I'm sitting here after a small party at mine and a night out at a Moroccan restaurant (Sheesha is HIGHLY recommended) and sitting in font of me are leftovers of skittle vodka and a homebrew that was left over after I handed out about a dozen for people to try. After browsing these forums...

    google calculator

Yeah I often Google # US ounce in g, and get results from Google calculator :) so simple! :) and yeah I find metric so much easier, although I will always be drinking my pint, nobody is going to go to the bar and ask for 568ml of beer. (UK pint measurement of course, we get more :D)

    Burns lungs when you smell

Was there an eggy smell? If I'm not mistake, it's sulfur dioxide that does this. I've put my nose to campden tablets before and woah, it really did burn. Not recommended

    Screen Printing Labels

I've found that gouache paint scrubs off dinner plates (that I use as pallets) with relative ease, so I'm sure it would scrub off glass, I may have to experiment with that. The paint also has a really high pigmentation, so in theory the colour should come out pretty vividly. Again I would have...

New label for my American Pale Ale

Quality label :D It's a tough call trying to place that brewery logo, but I think it's at best where it is, there's no other place it can really go without obstructing the text or the focal point. Maybe extend the label and add recipe/details/brew and bottle date/ humorous government warning etc...

    First attempt at racking=disaster

A bottle wand would do this perfectly, I bought one a couple of months back and it is so useful for transferring beer without aerating :rockin:

    ferment

Only problem with that is that the plastic (I assume it's plastic?) could be permeable to oxygen, which could oxidize the beer, and you wouldn't want that. How long it would take for this I don't know. It doesn't cost much to invest in a Better Bottle fermenter, it's like a water container but...

    Alcohol Percentage

*sigh* Sadly I didn't notice the suspicious wording of his post... Next question will be "how to make it more alcoholic" and then more memorable insults on par with Elitist *ss C*nt when he realises everyone is having a laugh at his expense :) hmmm that sounds familiar somehow...

    Caramel cream ale?

Now that was a close one... I have just gathered all the ingredients for this brew, including what I believe to be imitation vanilla extract but am now going to be ditching it for the real deal, I REALLY don't want this to screw up, sounds so good! According to the beer recipator, this brew's...

    Alcohol Percentage

Sorry for not being specific, but you can learn a lot from reading http://www.howtobrew.com/ Has so much in depth information in home brewing. It was extremely helpful to me when I started out. EDIT: Oh yeah, Welcome to the forums/the addiction that is homebrewing!

    My First Brew

So true, plus I find having an expendable supply of alcohol in your home is helpful so you don't pounce on the homebrew. Although it doesn't really hurt to have a taster every couple of days or so, just to see how your beer is coming along :)

Can you mix Oxymagic and bleach?

Never mix cleaning products, my old chemistry teacher once told us a story about someone who did this and had to be admitted to hospital with severe respiratory problems - The cause? Chlorine gas had been released as the chemicals in each product reacted, and she had been inhaling the fumes as...

Help with first recipe for my new kit please?

I did that with my first ever brew, a Bavarian lager at Ale temps... it turned out quite nicely actually, and my brother told me it was quite a convincing lager :) not sure if he was just being nice... heh. Learned OHSO much since back then, and have mainly these forums to thank :mug:

    where to store bottles?

I used to think the yeast layer was undissolved sugar, and daily I would shake the bottles... bad bad plan. Great how much experience you gain with each batch :) With subsequent batches I kept the bottles under the stairs for a week, and then moved them to the garage. Meant that they were...

    Better Bottles or Glass Carboys

I'm getting a BB this weekend, at my hbs they are cheaper than glass carboys, and would most definitely be cheaper in the long term, since I could pretty much guarantee that I would drop a *full* glass carboy... yeeeashh... Getting it ported at my hbs doesn't cost any extra, but all the parts...

    OSH Corny Label

Looking sweet! Old speckled Hen is by far my favorite commercial Ale. Might have to search for a recipe EDIT: Ooooh found it in your beer blog Orfy :D thanks! EDIT#2: And the measurements are metric! No more conversion calculators, I'm so happy :D

How do you print your labels ?

I use ink jet and hairspray to seal the ink, although I have experienced Ink running when a cold beer comes into a warm environment for a long time... but usually there beer has been consumed before this and the ink running doesn't happen, so I'm still more than happy to make my labels on the...
