    extract barley wine recipe

I'm looking too, and given the cost and time involved in a barleywine, I think getting the recipe right would be key :) One thing I've found is that barleywine is a pretty generic description and other than being 'strong', the flavor of various versions exists along a wide spectrum... My wife...

    Stocking as grainbag

I'd imagine it would work fine, but they tear pretty easily. I'd be more inclined to try and find some cheesecloth and make a bag out of that.

Has any one bought a new fride for kegerator construction?

Make sure you check with your insurance company on requirements to process claims. Last homeowners claim we filed (lightning strike took out furnace, computers, tvs, garage door opener, etc), they cut us a check based on estimates of replacement value, but then we also had to turn in receipts to...

    New to home brewing

Local stores are indeed the best place for carboys. Wine stores have them too, so check those places as well. Our local wine on premesis store has glass carboys for $18, which is a better deal than mail order places and no shipping hassles.

    Brewer's Best vs. MoreBeer kits

Wow, they have a 'Get Netscape Navigator 3' button on their page.. That was released in 1996! I hope their kits are more up to date than their website...

    My First Smack Pack Attempt

I never smack it, it never works for me :) Just wiggle the inner pouch up to a corner and trap it there, lay it on the counter and press down until it pops. No hurting your hand this way... My longest time to swell was 6 days, after the pack had been kept in a car in august for 2 weeks. Beer...

THE MAIN EVENT: All Grain vs Extract

On the flip side, there's plenty of food made from scratch that is nasty. And old. I'm not sure how you figure a can of extract is not as fresh as grains. Either one could be old or recent. Plus I'm not convinced that 'fresh' really matters in terms of malt, you're mainly dealing with sugars...

    how do they make yeast?

Hmmm, Flying Spaghetti Monster Ale. Has a nice ring to it.

    how do they make yeast?

Just my curiousity for the day... The general rule seems to be not to use re-use yeast more than 4 times. So, how do wyeast and the other guys 'make' yeast? I would imagine they just keep breeding it from the yeast they already have, but there's no way you could sustain that without going way...

Sanitation smanitation... Let me hear your brew horrors!

You know, people have been brewing beer for thousands of years. People have known about micro organisms for what, a few hundred years? There's no way the old monks and early home brewers had any clue about sanitation, they didn't even know that yeast was involved. Lambics are even left open to...

    Flaked oats?

I think rolled oats are fine. My LHBS had flaked oats, I was planning on just picking up some quaker oats (I believe you want the quick cook kind) but when I handed the store my grain bill they put the oats in the bag...

    bakers chocolate in a porter

I just finished a chocolate oatmeal stout a few weeks ago and didn't have any problem with the boil. I added it 10 minutes before the end and it dissolved fine and smelled fantastic. The only real problem I had was that after 1 week in the primary, there was a 2-3" layer of 'fudge' on the bottom...

    Preserving DME

I think you'll be fine in a ziploc bag. If you want to add a little insurance, suck the air out of the bag through a straw, you can get a psuedo vacuum seal that way.

    Fermentation temp control

75-80 is a bit warm for fermetning but I would think you'd be fine at 70. I do most ales in the basement, which is 69-70 year round, and that's about the ideal temperature for most ale yeasts.

    Next up oatmeal stout

I just have 5.5 gallons marked with a sharpie on my fermenting bucket. I boil however much water I decide to boil, usually 2-3 gallons, and then add ice cold water to the bucket up to the 5.5 gallon line. One nice thing about doing extracts...

    Paintball Style CO2 Adapter

What does this offer over existing products? There are already on/off valves and other type of valves for paintball cylinders which let you use a standard regulator, available at paintball shops for < $10...

    regulator...

I'm shooting for < $100. I've only got one batch brewing now so I figure, start with one keg and add on. I need to call my local store and see if the $25 kegs are good to go or need work. If they're cleaned and tested and have fresh gaskets, that's cheaper than I've been able to find with any...
