    Any cheaper alternatives to brewing?

I just ordered some supplies from Mt. Washington Homebrew (http://www.brewbyyou.com/) after some people had mentioned their wort chillers (they raised the price, but at least a few people ordered them and received their orders without problems). For the prices, I figured I'd give them a shot. I...

    Oatmeal Stout

This could explain why my chocolate oatmeal stouts tastes funny.... Live and learn. I think I'll try again with a 1 gallon test batch and mash the oats with some 2-row...

    I love my wife

I think the biggest problem I have with my wife is brewing often enough to keep her supplied :) That and having open fermenters not filled with her wine...

    Implications of not bottling

Sounds like you want one of these: http://www.northernbrewer.com/mini-kegs.html You can also get screw on tops for 2 liter soda bottles that let you carb them, but you'd need a co2 tank which costs more than a tap a draft or similar setup. Of course you can also go for a full kegging...

    favorite 'big' beers

Ok I got some of the Old Rasputin at Whole Foods last weekend, that is some fine stuff. Probably the best 'big' beer I've tried yet. The Rogue Imperial Stout was good, but it was a little too thick and overwhelming to be something I could drink regularly. The Old Rasputin was very flavorful but...

    My Chocolate Stout Recipe...thoughts?

Well I kegged my chocolate stout and I'm not certain on it. It still taste's funny, after 1 week in primary and 3 weeks in secondary. I'm going to let it sit to see if it gets any better but I don't know. The 8 oz of cocoa added a nice chocolatey touch but it isn't overhwelminigly chocolate...

    Shakespeare Clone... Opinions?

Most rogue brews seem to use 'northwest harrington' and 'klage' malts, not sure how much it matters, but I've never heard anything about these malts outside of rogue beer labels... Are they just a specific variety of 2 row or something?

    what's on my beer?

I only boiled it about 10 minutes, I didn't realize cocoa powder had that much fat in it...

    what's on my beer?

Been in the basement, pretty steady 69 degrees. I had my wife check it too and she thinks the odd smell and taste are alkalinity from the cocoa powder. I did use a bunch. It's not really a solvent smell, alkaline does describe it pretty well. It tastes pretty good. I think next time less...

    what's on my beer?

I dunno, it has an odd smell and taste to it as well. I'm not sure how to describe it other than odd... Not skunky, sort of a chemically smell? I got it into the keg, the slick part on top was pretty solid almost like a layer of donut glaze, and it stuck to the sides as the level dropped...

    what's on my beer?

I kegged my chocolate oatmeal stout today and there was some oddness on the top... It's been in secondary for around 3 weeks while I've been putting together my kegging equipment. Any idea what this stuff is? It had cocoa powder and lactose added, maybe just some cocoa solids or something?

    tubing and co2 distribution

Yeah I looked yesterday but the only 3/16" ID tubing they had said on the box 'WARNING: do not use for ice maker' which lead me to believe it wasn't food grade...

    tubing and co2 distribution

Yeah but ordering it online will cost me $3 for the tubing and $7 for the shipping, plus I have to wait a week and I'm ready to keg this weekend. Granted I won't need the beverage line this weekend but it would be helpful for testing everything out. There's got to be some local place that...

    tubing and co2 distribution

My LHBS was out of 3/16" tubing for the beverage dispensing, do they carry it at home depot/lowes/etc or do I have to order super special beverage tubing? I have everything except the bev. tubing and some hose clamps... Also, when it comes to co2 distribution, what would I need to be able to...

    My Chocolate Stout Recipe...thoughts?

My chocolate stout is aging currently. I did it with: 1.5 lbs crystal 80 1 lb flaked oats 0.5 lbs chocolate malt 0.5 lbs roast barley 6.6 lbs light LME 8 oz cocoa powder 10 oz lactose 2 oz norther brewer hops, 60 minutes I added the cocoa and lactose for the last 5 minutes of the boil. I've...

    Found my co2 :)

No, they fill them, they seem to supply pretty much everyone in town with co2. Refill on a 15lb tank is something like $12. I picked up my tank and I don't think they're new, but they're in good shape and the hydro stamp was 10/06, so good enough. $75 for a full tank isn't too shabby either...

    Found my co2 :)

So I called our local beer distributor and asked if they did deposits or refills on co2 tank and they said no, they use a local company called Geer Gas. I called them up and asked if they sold Co2 in tank on a deposit or anything and they said no, but they do sell the smaller tanks. I asked how...

    I want to Keg!...but

You can get lucky and find deals, sure. I would have a hard time believing you could keg for less than $200 if you need chilling. It's cheaper if you can just get a full size fridge, since you can find used old fridges cheap or free. Mini fridges though, the odds aren't as good. I've actually...

    I want to Keg!...but

most used dorm fridges also won't hold corny kegs. There are only a few that will in fact, since most of them have a freezer compartment and a bump in the back of the fridge for the compressor. The afore mentioned sanyo, and the danby models are about the only ones I've found that would actually...
