new guy, looking for an option between bottling and metal kegging...

The tap a draft system can hook up to 3 liter soda bottles. I read a lot about it before I acquired a keg fridge and I think it's a pretty solid setup for someone who isn't ready to dive into corny kegs yet.

    imperial pilsner

It is a fantastic beer. I've never had the dogfish head to compare to, but the rogue is great. It definately has some more sweetness to it and is really hopped up, but good. It comes in at 8.8%, which I'm a bit under with 16 lbs of malt, but I'm thinking that's ok... I know the saflager is...

How to keep braid from floating?

I just took a spare hose clamp I had laying around and tightened it around the other end. Granted I haven't really got down in there during a mash but I haven't seen it float up...

Do you use your spent grains?

That would be an Opossum, the only marsupial native to north america. Pretty common around here, but not usually in the suburbs...

Another 1st All Grain - Urgent question

I've always just added all the grain, and then dumped in all the water and then stirred. Haven't had any problems, including using up to 18 lbs of grain. If it works fine is there any reason I shouldn't do this?

Do you use your spent grains?

Here's what I found the other day: You don't get too many small woodland creature in the suburbs...

    imperial pilsner

Well, I'm ready to try a clone of Rogue's Morimoto Imperial Pilsner. It should be pretty simple, as they only list 4 ingredients (belgian pilsner malt, sterling hops, water and czech pilsner yeast). Here's what I've got: 16 lbs Belgian Pilsner Malt 3 oz sterling hops (60 min) 1.5 oz...

    whole hops vs pellets...

The ID Carlson hops definately suck... I have yet to manage to get a decent whirlpool with whole hops, there's just too much of it. And last time I just tried to siphon through the whole hops, my autosiphon broke as I tried to pump the wort through the siphon clogged with hop leaves...

    whole hops vs pellets...

So I guess the upshot is, I need to get a bigger kettle... Or does anyone manage to get a full amount of wort out of a 7 gallon kettle while using whole hops?

    whole hops vs pellets...

Ok old topic, but I'm curious what everyone has noticed personally on the difference in their beers using whole or pellet hops. I've been doing whole hops on the last few batches and I'd guess, though I can't really say for sure, that my dry hopped beers have had much nicer aroma from the whole...

    My Chocolate Stout Recipe...thoughts?

Some of us want to taste the chocolate though :) I racked to secondary, added a pot of strong decaf coffee, 2 oz vanilla and 4 ounces chocolate extract. Overall it tastes pretty good, but even with the 4 ounces of extract it's not really all that chocolately. What can ya do... The amount...

    My Chocolate Stout Recipe...thoughts?

I've given up on pure cocoa for chocolate flavor, I think it needs to be kicked up a notch :) Here's my latest attempt: 12 lbs 2-row 1.5 lbs Chocolate Malt 1.5 lbs Crystal 60 0.5 lbs Flaked Oats 0.5 lbs Roast Barley 0.5 lbs Black Malt 1 oz Norther Brewer - 60 minutes 1 oz Norther Brewer - 15...

    Help with ESB recipe.

I'm brewing one this weekend, trying to match Rogue's Younger's Special Bitter which is one of my favorites. 10 lbs 2-row 1.5 lb Crystal 60 1 lb Carapils 2 ounces black malt 1.5 oz Williamette (60 minutes) .75 oz Kent Golding (20 Minutes) .5 oz Kent Golding (5 Minutes) .5 oz Kent Golding (dry...

    Caramel cream ale?

I did kind of a bastardization of the two... Oddly enough, what's really tasty is mixing it black and tan style with the vanilla imperial porter I brewed at the same time... That one I just put in secondary with two split vanilla beans, and it has almost no vanilla flavor, but it's a great...

Is One Step by Logic a cleaner or sanitizer

One step is definately a sanitizer. It's basically oxy clean without any detergents. Which brings up another point, you can use oxyclean instead, but you have to rinse well since it has surficants and other chemicals in it.

how do you measure water and wort?

I tried marking my mash paddle but it lasted about 1 brew before it wore off (a little sharpie ink in the brew can't hurt...). A wooden stick sounds good, that shouldn't wear off so much. I figured marking the inside of the kettle would wear off, and marking the outside would be too hard to...

how do you measure water and wort?

I've done 3 all grain batches so far and they've turned out great (with my ghetto rigged cooler even), but I'm trying to refine my water amounts since all 3 batches have missed my target 5.5 gallon batch size and thus changed up the gravity of the beers. One thing I'm curious about is how...

    Caramel cream ale?

I don't allow imitation vanilla in my house :) Granted I don't get premium premium extract, but the sams just of pure vanilla extract. I don't have my notes but I'm pretty sure I used at least 8 ounces total, probably around 10. Still isn't overwhelmingly vanilla flavored, and with age the...

    Caramel cream ale?

Well, all I can say is after brewing, give it time... We kegged this one in early december and sampled it a few weeks later. We didn't like it. We actually planned to bottle it up and give it away... But we let it sit on the gas for a month and a half. Now, it's good. We like it. We drink it...
