Mac Users? Do you use the brewing software I found?

Wow, BeerAlchemy seems very cool from the web page and screen shots. Do you find that it's very accurate in its predictions? Is it comparable to promash's accuracy, in your experience?

Mac Users? Do you use the brewing software I found?

I've recently purchased a Mac Pro (intel), and I've been searching for the mac version of all my favorite programs. Of course, I love Promash and I have gotten lots of use out of it. Well, I stumbled across a free program called Homebrew Formulator, and it's pretty impressive. Apparently, it...

    step ladder for sparging?

You're exactly right. I just want to know where to get that ladder. it's perfect because you can hang it in the garage when you're done and it takes up pretty much no space, and you can even use it around the house. I also thought it was pretty funny that your reply was above the question...

    step ladder for sparging?

Hey all, On these forums, one time, I saw a picture of someone using a step ladder for sparging, and I was wondering where that picture is (didn't find it when searching), and what type of latter it was, and where this person got it. Anyone know? Thanks!

    So over my PM

well you need a mash/lauter tun and a 10 gallon polarware pot with a spigot would be really nice. a chiller is pretty much required, too, and a sparge arm makes things really nice. But maybe we could help you with your partial mash efficiency?

Opinions on an ESB recipe, please

Hey, no problem. I definitely appreciate the comments and feedback, and your input was certainly the type that I was looking for. I was just trying to explain the reasoning behind the grain bill. I brew with a friend of mine, and we alternate beers. On one session, I'll contribue the recipe...

Opinions on an ESB recipe, please

I hear ya. I've been reading "Radical Brewing" by Mosher, and he suggests getting your malty flavor from a greater amount of lighter grains rather than a smaller amount of darker grains for english beer. I was just hoping that the amber malt will fill in on the flavor end, and that is in the...

Opinions on an ESB recipe, please

Thanks for the responses, people. Yeah, I remember having about 50 IBU in Promash, so maybe i had 1.5 oz NB at the beginning of the boil. Does everybody think that the crystal is a bit much? Perhaps i could substitute a half pound or pound extra pale malt and go with only 1 or 1.5 lbs crystal?

Opinions on an ESB recipe, please

Hey All, I posted this in the "Ingredients" forum, but I thought I'd also post it here. Feel free to get rid of one thread or the other, if i'm not supposed to post the same thing in two places. A friend and I are about to brew an ESB, and we were wondering what everybody thought about our...

Opinions on an ESB recipe, please

Hey All, A friend and I are about to brew an ESB, and we were wondering what everybody thought about our recipe. I'll get right to it without further adieu: 8 lbs pale malt 2 lbs amber malt 2 lbs 10L crystal 1 oz Northern Brewer (60 Min) 1 oz E.K. Goldings (30 Min) 1 oz E.K. Goldings (15...

conversion kit for 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler?

I have a conversion kit for my 10 gallon igloo cooler, and I like it a lot. This is the kit that supplies a weldless bulkhead and ball valve to convert the spout-hole in the cooler to a useable valve. I'd also like to find one of these for my 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler, but I haven't had any...

    Partial mash

You might want a slightly larger cooler than five gallons because it's hard to do anything above a "normal gravity" beer in those, especially if you add water for mash-out. 7.5 gallons might be a tad better. I'd also recommend against a bazooka tube or a braided hose for your manifold if you...

How clear should your runnings be?

Cleaner mash/sparge runnings means cleaner beer. I always see some minimal amount of crap running through the tube, and the beer doesn't seem to suffer. But you have to be careful that you don't have too much stuff in the boil pot.

Can you raise your sg after fermintation starts

It's quite acceptable to add more sugar to a batch during fermentation. that's a better way to get really high alcohol beer (the ones upward of twenty percent) - gradually ramp up the concentration of fermentable sugars. When you do what david_42 suggested, pay particular attention to where he...

Finally got our efficiency up to par!

You have to be careful not to raise the grainbed temperature over 170 degrees because you can leach tannins and haze-contributing components that you'd rather leave behind.

Finally got our efficiency up to par!

So how do you guys dough-in? do you do it incrementally, or do you do it all at once?

Finally got our efficiency up to par!

Yes, we fly sparge, so I'm going to run far, far away from the bazooka tube and never look back! :)

I dont think I care about my OG anymore

I don't know why anybody wouldn't want to use all the tools available to him/her. We are involved in this hobby because we love beer, and we like to make our own, and in the all grain forum, we like to have the ultimate control and flexibility in our beermaking. We have tons of gadgets and...

Finally got our efficiency up to par!

Hey everybody, A friend and I just brewed a stout today (specifically, Lancaster Milk Stout) and we finally seem to have our efficiency in line. Previously, we were only able to obtain about 65%, but we achieved the target 75% today. I figured I'd post what we've been doing differently, so...

A godsend for all of us who brew Belgian style ale!

Hey, all... I don't know if anyone already posted about this, but now we can get real Belgian candi syrup, which is supposedly identical to the stuff that brewers use in Belgium. Check out this link, although you can probably also get it elsewhere...
