New to the site and first brew attempt

Sweet! How'd that turkey fryer do? I've considered picking that same model up, but thought I'd read something about that built-in timer being a PITA.

What to brew with these hops??

A cream ale is the first thing that comes to mind if you're not set up for doing lagers.

    Planning my second brew day

And now: a moment of silence for my trusty digital thermometer. After guiding me through another brew day, it took a dive off the counter and into a bucket of StarSan solution. Good night, sweet prince.

    Yeast activity

Yeah, don't sweat it, man. It can take up to 72 hours to show signs of fermentation. Also, are you brewing in a bucket or a clear carboy? If you're going by airlock alone, it doesn't really mean anything, anyway. The airlock's just there to keep the lid from blowing off while excess CO2 is...

    Planning my second brew day

Decided to just go ahead and do the kit and save the other crap for later. The only deviation was I added 1 tsp. of Irish Moss @ 15 min. After vigorous stirring, I ended up with an OG of 1.050. Figure it's probably closer to 1.048, but I'll take it either way. :rockin: Now just gotta give...

    Planning my second brew day

Well, now I'm wondering if I should just go with the kit as is and save the Simcoe and DME for a future batch. I'd like to do an IPA next, since I'll have plenty of S-05 from the slurry that will be left over. Maybe I'll figure out a recipe that can use those 2 and just throw the hops in the...

    What are you drinking now?

Finally got around to trying Red Chair NWPA tonight. Congratulations, Deschutes: You are now 3/3 in my book. :rockin:

    Week in the Fridge

As with what everyone else said, let it condition at room temp first. That said, it's also a good idea to put it in the fridge before giving it away, as whomever you give it to might not have the patience to keep it in for a week before drinking it.

    Looking for affordable brew enhancers

Only if you're going all grain. With grain and malt extract, however, you can easily do a full 5 gallon batch.

    Planning my second brew day

With the pound of extra light added, BrewTarget is calculating 39.9 IBU's and .76 IBU/GU. Think it might be off for some reason?

    which hops to bitter

Yeah, sorry about that. I realized a bit later (on my way to work, actually) that I'd worded that rather badly.

    which hops to bitter

Sorta. Cascade at the beginning for sure. Then FF7C at about 15-20 minutes, and the Willamette in the last 5 minutes.

    Planning my second brew day

Alright, placed the order with Midwest today. After running it through BT, I decided to pick up some extra DME as well to boost the ABV to about 5.1%. Here's what the recipe is looking like right now: 3.3 lbs Light DME 1 lb Extra Light DME 8 oz. Cara-Pils 8 oz. Caramel 10L .5 oz...

What your pet peeve about Brewing

For me, it's trying to do it out here in BFE. Went to Wal-Mart last night. No Oxy Clean to clean empty bottles with. No paint strainer bags to do BIAB with. Only 5 gallon round coolers, and only 1 rectangular one with a spout on the side. Nearest Lowe's is an hour away. Nearest HD is 2.

    What are you drinking now?

Same here. It's one of the few really good IPA's I can consistently get out here in the sticks. And this pack is even better than the ones I've had before.

    What are you drinking now?

Hit the jackpot tonight. When I picked up that Black Butte, I also got a sixer of Torpedo. Guess I must have gotten in on a particularly fresh shipment, because this is the best tasting Torpedo I've ever had. :rockin:

    non-craft drinkers complaining about homebrews

Kinda the opposite for me, here. When I got back from Afghanistan, I was ready for a drink after all that time of them hammering G.O. #1 into our heads. :D Spent 4 months in SV for AIT back in '07. Don't miss that place one bit. lol

    Brew day!

Had some sinus crap going on earlier in the week. Took lots of vitamin C, some Tylenol Cold and Sinus, and drank a large amount of Torpedo. Went away in <48 hours. :D

    What are you drinking now?

I'm on the opposite side of the state out in BFE. Selection is severely limited around here, but they've always got good stuff in. I know I can always get either Torpedo or one of a variety of SA at the place I go to. Also, I recently tried the O'Fallon 5 day IPA and liked it a lot. Just a...

    What are you drinking now?

Yeah, hopefully the local place will get those two in. They didn't have the NW in today, though I've seen it there before. It was just last month that we've even been able to get Deschutes here in IL.
