Do most people force carb or set it to serving PSI and let it carb normally?

Do you get much sludge in the bottom of keg carbing naturally? I usually force carb, but with the new 10 gal system, I 'm starting to ramp up my pipeline and I'll have the time to let kegs carb naturally in the storeroom while waiting for an open tap.

    Too late to plant rhizomes?

Here in upstate NY, I planted mine two weeks ago and they've broken through the soil already. The newports were up first and are already ~6" long. The santiams are next and the centennials have just poked their heads out of the ground. You can still plant rhizomes.

    Brewpubs That Suck

We only have one "brew pub" here - they're ok, good, not great. Middle Ages, Ommegang and Saranac pretty much rule the taps elsewhere. The single biggest thing a pub (and this isn't limited to brew pubs) can do to improve is to clean their damn lines on a regular basis. I travel quite a bit...

    Advice - Simple Electric Brewing

What you're looking for would be best provided by High Gravity. It's spendy, but that's the cost of having someone else do the labor. You can order everything from them and they'll punch all of the holes you want punched. And they can even help you design what you want for a system...

How long did you extract brew before going to All Grain?

Won't the SS spoon scratch up the MLT? Then again, I guess it doesn't matter because you're boiling everything afterwards anyway ...

How long did you extract brew before going to All Grain?

I just finished setting up my AG system after a half dozen extract batches and now I've done two AG batches. With a 15g kettle you can do 10g batches with another fermenter and a 10g cooler. I'd get a 10g cooler even if you're doing 5g batches for added flexibility (big beers). Also, with the...

    My Electric Brewery Build!

Are you using the Hop Stopper that Kal recommends? If you are, then plain water won't give you issues when draining the kettle for chilling. When he says that you have to slow the output to a trickle once the stopper is exposed to air, he means it. I found out the hard way when I drained the...

    Question

If you're building the space - design it for as big as you think you will go. Kal's system is based on a standard 30a/240(220)v dryer outlet and provides enough power to do ten gallon batches. The temp probes, weldless elements, and control panel can be bought fabricated. It's a damn good...

    My Electric Brewery Build!

I did a final test run last night from boil and it was the first time I got my chiller dialed into 70F quickly. It's a bit of game to get max flow while maintaining a consistent temp. Excellent chiller though. It's a little wobbly at the bottom and I don't quite trust the compression fittings...

    Exhaust?

I did some modifications today, leveled & re-ran the duct, re-hung the fan and hood, too. I haven't finished the run yet and when I do I'll test again. One if the things I've found with the active air fan is that, at least mine, when it's mounted to hang from the ceiling based on the...

    Exhaust?

Its the 6" active air. There's 5' of 6" duct / fan / reducer / 6' of 4" semi-rigid flex in a gentle curve to a 4" dryer vent. I'm thinking of putting more 6" duct after the fan.

    Exhaust?

Hooked the ducts up tonight and turned the fan on during an 8 gallon boil test. Good news is that on high the fan moves some air. There was a little steam escaping from the hood here and there, but nothing significant. The bad news was that I had serious condensation at the fan and it was...

    Exhaust?

I'm just wrapping up my vent hood and duct. For now, I'm sharing the dryer vent and using quick disconnects for both the dryer duct and the semi-rigid 4" duct that comes off of a 6-4 reducer from the 6" Active Air fan. I built the hood out of 1x2s and 1/2" foil-coated foam insulation board and...

    Hops comparison table

Thank you for loading the chart. Just ordered my rhizomes this morning and this spreadsheet helped in selecting which hops I wanted to plant. Cheers!

where can i find easy cider making instructions.

I currently have six gallons of cider sitting in the back corner of my wine cellar waiting for October. This is the second batch of cider I've made. The first I made in 2008 and did the basic cider+yeast=booze method. I have one 22oz bottle of that remaining and I think I'm going to open it...

Finally, hot water through the magic of electricity!!

Plenty of room. Its built to expand to a second pump and cooler for a HLT maybe. If/when i go for the full-on HERMs, I'll redo the panel, but thats a while down the road once the wallet recovers. Right now I'll just batch sparge to a grant. As for GFCI, I relocated my existing but unused...

Finally, hot water through the magic of electricity!!

That's almost exactly the same as Kal's on the electric brewery. I just used 1x2s with a 1/2" spacing for the slatted top.

Finally, hot water through the magic of electricity!!

They add bling, but because I have the CP on the table for now, they make it easier to move - just grab and go. They're 9" drawer pulls, but at least for the ones I picked up HD, the standard bolts are waaay too long for the plastic box. I ended up using some shorter ones out of my box o'...

Finally, hot water through the magic of electricity!!

When I first started this home brewing hobby about a year ago, I realized the pains of kitchen brewing almost immediately. The small pot (not enough clearance on the stove for anything big), chilling wort (first purchase after the first batch was an IC), bottling (first project was a keezer)...
