    Increasing pressure in kegerator

I've done a little searching but haven't found anything like this yet... I'm a newb to kegging. I bought a kegerator last weekend in San Diego and while I was down there I picked up a 1/6 keg of Stone's Pale Ale. I put the keg along with the CO2 tank in the kegerator overnight to let it...

    Blow off problem

I think the same tubing that attaches to the bottling bucket will attach to your airlock. That's what I've used in the past without having to go buy a new tube.

    adding flavored extracts

A lot of extract-based fruit flavors taste pretty bad once bottle conditioned. Almost medicinal (i.e. cherry cough medicine). The real thing is much better. I just finished a Belgian dubbel that I added 3 lbs of cherries, tasted MUCH better than the cherry wheat that I added extract flavoring to.

    Blow off problem

That's some good krausen porn. Keep your airlock on but instead of the cap put a blowoff tube. Remember to keep everything you touch sanitized. Once activity slows replace the tube with the normal airlock and fill with cheap vodka or sanitizer. You should be good from there. What beer are you...

    adding flavored extracts

If its an alcohol-based extract then it's fine. There are no more fermentables in it.

    Fermentation woes

Have you asked your LHBS owner if he/she or any of their customers has had the same problem? It sounds like you're doing everything right so their extract would be my prime suspect.

    Making a vanilla porter...should I add cherries?

I have a vanilla-almond porter bottled right now. Added 2 vanilla beans that I also had soaked in vodka. Make sure you cut the bean open lengthwise and use the blade to loosen all the seeds first. 2 beans are definitely noticeable but it's mellowed out nicely at about 4 weeks in the bottle. Next...

    Dishwasher to sanitize bottles?

Easy way...pre-scrub bottles before putting them in a dishwasher using PBW as a detergent on high heat. Put bottles on a tree that's been dipped in a brew bucket with PBW. Never had a contamination problem.

Questions using a pump & plate chiller

Do you need a pump to use the 30 plate chiller? If so, are there any plate chillers that don't require a pump? I was about to buy one at my LHBS until the owner told me I may need to purchase one.

First Brew ever! need some help and opinions

Boil the DME in 12-16 oz of water for 15 minutes prior to adding it to your fermented beer. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes then add it to your bottling bucket. Slowly siphon your beer into the bucket without splashing to prevent oxidation then mix well with a sanitized spoon, then bottle. What...

    Next beer suggestion

I just finished my first vanilla porter. What I did was purchase 2 whole vanilla beans, slice them open lengthwise and soak them in vodka for 1 day, this kills off any contaminants. Then throw the whole thing in a secondary fermenter. In 2 weeks I have a very distinct vanilla flavor. As far as...

What you need to know about chocolate for brewing

I recently have been creating my own liquid extracts at home (chocolate, banana, and bacon to start with). For the chocolate, I used two tablespoons of cocoa powder and dissolved it in 2 ounces vodka and 1 ounce purified water in a glass jar. It's been sitting for a little over a week and I plan...

    Banana Cream Ale

Bacon beer sounds delicious! I got that idea from an episode of Drinking Made Easy where a bar in Vegas makes bacon infused vodka. They take a cooked piece of smoked bacon and stick it in a vodka bottle for a while until it almost looks raw. THAT I'd like to try! As far as the banana...

    Banana Cream Ale

I've been thinking about doing a banana flavored beer for a while now when I came across this thread. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried adding banana extract when bottling to achieve that banana flavor. Recently I've been trying to create my own flavored extracts at home (banana...

    What's in my beer???

How did you clean your bottles prior to bottling? Did you use the dish washer with detergent? If you did then maybe the rinse didn't do a good enough job and there's still some soap on the inside of the bottle. This would kill your head retention and leave that oily film. It's not recommended to...
