    Liquor to grist ratios

How does everyone determine there liquor to grist ratio? Is it based on what recipe your doing? Your systems? Enzyme activity? I'm stumped. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Ghetto stands.

Having a porch/deck is nice. But if you don't have one a truck works well.

    Ghetto stands.

    What got you into homebrewing?

For me it was the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. I drank more mead than I should have. Shortly after I decided, Hell, I can make this at home. After making a few batches of mead I thought to myself, "I love beer, why not start brewing my own?!" That was about 2 years and 200 gallons ago...

How do I use this hop spider I built?

I still need to cut the bolts down to fit the kettle nice and snug. I'm in no rush on that, though. I'll just have to brew a batch and see if the bag floats. If so, I guess I could just use the bits I cut from the bolts to weigh the bag down.

How do I use this hop spider I built?

Its a "mouth" for a garbage disposal, "Insinkerator". 1/2 inch x 8 inch SS bolts(maybe 10 inch, i forget). Large enough SS hose clamp. Drilled a few holes and there ya go. Cheap and easy. Thanks. Well, cheap as far as SS goes.

How do I use this hop spider I built?

It's a 3.5 inch opening. Big enough to get the job done I figure. I'm not blind. I appreciate the feedback, though. Thank you for the heads up. I'll have to shorten the bag a bit cause it hangs down more than it should.

How do I use this hop spider I built?

I just thought I'd state its stainless to hedge the "is it stainless?" questions. "What does that have to do with anything?? It's pretty obvious (from the pic) that it's not using pvc fittings and such (using them, IMO, is a bad idea)..." Also, zinc. As in I didn't use zinc coated hardware...

How do I use this hop spider I built?

I use pellet as well. I just assumed the boil would push the bag up. I guess I shouldn't worry about it. Thank you!

How do I use this hop spider I built?

I built a nice hop spider and have been wondering how best to use it. I wonder if the nylon bag will just float to the top. I haven't used it yet. Is it best to put a bit of stainless steel or maybe copper in the bag to keep it from floating to the top during the boil? What is the best way...

Old Coleman Metal Cooler. Suitable Mash Tun?

Thanks for all the advice. I finally got the thing leak free(a bit of an ordeal). I'll keep ya'll posted on how it works. First all grain batch coming up in a week or two.

Just starting all grain, wish me luck.

I have been brewing with extract and have done some partial mashes. Helped a buddy with his first all grain batch. I've been using Designing Great Beers to figure my numbers out and have done it all with a pencil and pad so I hope it all works out. I think I'm gonna do a Pumpkin Ale for my...

Old Coleman Metal Cooler. Suitable Mash Tun?

I've acquired an old(80's maybe) coleman cooler. Metal outside, metal latch. Older style cooler. I was wondering if anyone has used a decades old cooler and if they are good at holding temps. My assumption is they will lose heat more rapidly than some of the newer ones. Is there a good way...
