    first direct heat mash

Thanks everyone for the input. Everything went great and I had perfect temperatures at every step. I was hoping this would bump up my efficiency, but I only got 65%. I think I know what the problem is. My pH strips suck....

    first direct heat mash

I have some insulation that is sealed in plastic, but I figured it would probably melt if I tried to wrap it around.

    first direct heat mash

It is a relatively new electric stove. I was thinking that I would give it a try on the stove first and if that wasn't working than taking it out onto the propane stove. I just thought the kitchen stove would work better for producing a small amount of heat to keep the temperature constant.

    first direct heat mash

I am planning on doing a Hennepin clone and I am going to use a step mash, but instead of doing it in my cooler I am going to do it in my brewpot on the stove. I have attached a SS braid and I think I am ready to go. Any advice or tips for my first direct heat mash on a stove?

I need Help choosing a beer.

Well man, that is a hard thing do for someone. I would recommend going to a good grocery store or market that has a big selection. Pick up a couple six packs of things you have never had before. It will be a little more expense than what you are used to, but once you find something you like you...

    need help with Hennepin Clone

I am going to be doing a Hennepin Clone this weekend... The recipe is as follows: 2 lbs candi sugar (I heard 2 lbs of cane sugar was fine so that is what I am using) 9 lbs Pils malt 3 lbs pale malt 1.5 oz styrian goldings for 60 min 0.5 oz Saaz for 15 min 1 oz bitter orange peel...

What kind of water do you guys use

My tap water is no good either. I have down extract and AG batches with it, but now that I have switched over to using a filter I feel like I am getting a "cleaner" beer. My filter system includes an $10 refrigerator filter from Lowes and 10 ft of quarter inch tubing. I attach one end to the...

    Priming with Pepsi???

the verdict is in... It carbonated just fine, but tasted terrible as many of you so wisely told me. Oh well, I am stubborn. Curiousity satified.

    ring o round the longneck

I just thought it was too prevent you from getting stale beer from excessive O2. I can think of no reason why a half full bottle would explode before a full one of the same brew would.

    Nut Brown Recipe?

When I was first starting out I did a Nut Brown Ale from a kit I got at the HBS. It was probably the best extract beer I made. People loved it. FYI- I was reading somewhere that Newcastle is a difficult style of beer to replicate because it is a mix of an aged dark ale with a unaged pale ale...

    Hefe FG question

Not to disagree with someone who appears to have much more experience than me, but, I think I would go ahead and rack it. It is not like you are putting it bottles where you need to worry about explosions. Besides, the transfer may awaken the yeast and help them finish up those last couple of...

    Wisdoms and problems

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I had heard to mash longer so I did it for 90 mins. Would it have helped any to go longer than this?

    Wisdoms and problems

Yesterday I had a bunch of friends over to have a good time, grill out, and observe the brewing process. Everything was going fine until people showed up and it starting thunderstorming. With all the guests I could not give my beer to be the attention that it needed. The boil was hardly a boil...

    Help!!!!!

Are you racking to a secondary? Are you kegging or bottling? If bottling are you stirring up the yeast from the bottle when you pour and letting a bunch of them get in your glass? Are you letting it age for several weeks? What type of beers have you been making? more details please...

    Man that's bitter...astringent?

Any chance that you used too much hops or boiled them for too long. I didn't double check my last all-grain stout recipe and it was very very bitter. I went online to a recipe and the IBU's where around 90! Oops.. That extreme bitterness has chilled out a little bit, but it sounds similar to...

    Priming with Pepsi???

MOOOTHHHER!! I confused lactose for fructose...and I was a biochemistry major. Well I guess I will just crack the lid of the 3-liter a few days in.

    how much force carbing?

So I have a stout that I would like to be at about 2.3. If my temperature is 40 F I would shake the keg until at 10 psi no more CO2 will go into the beer? Could someone double check me on that please.

    how much force carbing?

So far I haven't even used up one...and it wasn't full when I started. I can't tell you how much carbonation I have yet because I haven't tried it yet. But remember, I am doing a 3-liter keg so obviously it takes a lot less that the big boys.
