When you say 7 gallons of sparge water you mean 7 gallons minus what was in the MLT to begin with right? Otherwise I would have 9 gallons of wort...way too much for me to handle.

Ok I figured out what I was doing wrong in my calculation. I am now calculating 60% efficiency like you guys. This makes me feel a little better about how I have been doing but I will try some of the things you guys were talking about.

I am using 36 pts for my 2-row and 40 for my wheat malt to calculate my efficiency. Are these too high? Where else can I find a list of gravity and color for grains?

I didn't stir the grains before the first draining, but I did stir them when I added the second batch of sparge water. I will give this a try next time. Could I drain what is in there first and then sparge with my 4 gallons of water, 2 gallons at a time? Or are you just saying that I need...

Yes I am using a SS braid and batch sparging. I am also getting my grains crushed at the LHBS. I have wanted to get a barley crusher but I can't put out that kind of money at the moment. Maybe that is what I need to save up for next. I am using a TruTemp digital thermometer and I have checked...

    another efficiency post

So I just completed doing my 6th AG brew and I can't seem to get my efficiency up. My efficiency history has been: Stout 1 - 62% Stout 2 - 60% Bavarian Weizenbier - 50% Belgian Ale - 55% Pale Ale - 49% Hefeweizen - 50% I have redone my MLT and got a cooler that holds temps much...

    accurate?? hydrometer readings

I have been trying to get a hydrometer reading of my wort before the boil...err actually during the boil. So I was wondering if it is even possible to get an accurate reading of boiling wort, or if the mere act of boiling makes it impossible. Seems like I always get readings of 1.000 or...

    WTF is eating my hops?

You may not want to sacrifice a home brew for this, but it will work.... We use to have a bad slug problem on our hastas (sp?). Take a plastic cup and pour some beer in it. Place a couple of these around your plants. The slugs are attracted to the sweetness of the beer. They crawl right in...

    Dry Ice Carbonation (video)

I have tried this also. I used two modified 3-L mini kegs to achieve the carbonation. I had pressure tested my mini kegs before so I knew how much pressure they could take and had a pressure relieve valve in the form of a tap. (which gives way around 60psi to let the excess co2 out). When ready...

    Cooling wort during water conservation

I have a large rubbermaid bin that I use to sanitize my bottles. Fill this up when you are chilling, add the sanitizer or cleaner of your choice, and let your guilt fade away.

    About yeast washing time

I have been following the directions on the wiki page, but I am having a problem with separation. After adding the glycerin and shaking I put it into the freezer. I check it later on and it has seperated so that the yeast is on the bottom and the clear glycerin is on the top! Has this...

    Mash / Lauter Tun

Yes I do think that a 10 gallon cooler would be too big for partial mashes. I would use the 5 gallon. And yes you can do batch sparging with only one cooler, as long as you have a decent size brewpot and something to catch your wort (other than your brewpot because you will need it for heating...

    bitter beers preference

True true, I agree. And maybe I have been saying this wrong. It is the bitterness of the IPAs that I do not like....not the hop aroma and flavor. So maybe it is not the quantity, but rather the length of the boil that the hops undergo that makes me not like it. hmmm

I am also curious if the people who love lots of hops would taste this: http://whozoo.org/mac/Music/taster.htm don't know if you guys have ever heard of this, but I tested myself and found it VERY digusting. My girlfriend didn't taste a thing.

    bitter beers preference

Ah well I knew I was going to get a lot of people that said they didn't smoke but liked a lot of hops. I guess what I am interested in is if people that smoke tend to like more hoppy beers. But so far there hasn't been any smokers who commented. My theory was just that the type of people...

    bitter beers preference

After reading through some posts here I came across one and people were talking about there IPAs and how great they were. I personally am not the biggest fan of the IPAs, although I do like some brands. Recently myself and a few friends noticed that people who smoked like bitterer beer. Now...
