BTW, whatever you decide to get, make it something that you can brew together and crack open the first beer together. It will make for a lasting memory even if the beer sucks. Point is to enjoy those moments together because trust me, they're fleeting.

The MB kit should be great. It's a proven concept and introduces him to the hobby. Not sure what your fathers age but he may not be interested in toting around the standard 5 gal systems. I have a middle of the road system but would still love a Mr B kit to fiddle with. I say go for it

What kit was it, and do you recall the Original Gravity? The smack pack by itself does not constitute a starter. A starter consists of a quantity of malt extract, to which the yeast is introduced before going into the wort. Most smack packs can be directly pitched into worts of 1.060 or less...

Avoiding the use of the tank was likely due to production costs. A tank, cruising the streets of Atlanta, with actors in its proximity? The insurance for that scene would be insane. Besides, starting and driving a tank has a bit of a learning curve attached.
