im a noob and have a few questions

i have learned more about beer in the last 11 days then i knew before. i am a young brewer so that may be one of the reasons but i also just caught the fever. home brewing is an amazing process with endless possibilities.

im a noob and have a few questions

from what i have read it can take longer - that's why people use starters for it - but it really just depends on the temperature of the wort at the time you pitched the yeast and the temperature it is kept at during fermenting (pretty sure you can quote me on this) just sit back and relax my...

im a noob and have a few questions

i believe the preferred method is to add the priming mixture to the bottling bucket then pour the wort on top of it - this process will ensure a well mixed wort for bottling. however my recipe says to dump it in on top of the wort in the bottling bucket

    Hydrometer's broke, is fermentation done?

I just received 'how to brew' by john palmer as a christmas present - he says he leaves his beer in the primary fermenter for 3 weeks to a month and recommends nothing less then 2 weeks i think the only way you can tell if fermentation is done is to open up your bucket and take a gravity...

    My first brew

yeah i know, i didnt take the OG reading because i was/am a dumb rookie and spaced on a turkey baster. i had read about letting your beer ferment for a lot longer then what the recipe said (3 days of fermenting 4 days of settling - 4 weeks off bottling) and was planing on it. i also realize...

    My first brew

Hi guys, my first brew is still in the fermenter - i could probably bottle it tomorrow or the next day but am going to wait until the 27th to check the gravity and bottle ... but i was wondering i got a 6.5 glass carboy that i just picked up - was wondering if it would be worth it to rack it...

okay taste, weird smell....what does this mean?

i have found that my 'fermometer' strip on my bucket doesn;t really tell me much - my apt will be set at like 68-70 but because of drafts and such my first batch has been fluctuating between about 62-72 degrees. someone mentioned to me also your beer is usually about 4 degrees warmer on the...

    fluctuating temperatures during fermentation

i have a stick on thermometer on my bucket - i think you are right though about the liquid temp.not changing too much its just the thermometer keeps reading differently do to drafts and then being heated up.

    fluctuating temperatures during fermentation

i have my true brew amber ale fermenting in a closet in my kitchen - it is supposed to ferment between 60-75 degrees - the coldest its been is like 62 and the warmest its been is about 72 - was wondering if these fluctuating temperatures (out of my control because the closet is drafty and near...

    My first brew

i am really happy you said that because i feel i may have contaminated my beer if you hadn't. i was using a pitcher that had been in the fridge without a top to pour the filtered brita water in - i hadn't even thought of cleaning it or the brita filter - i'm starting over - hah, and i had...

    My first brew

oh yeah im using brita filtered tap water - i havent read anything that says normal tap water isnt ok unless 'tap water in your area is questionable' which i really isnt here. i was wondering though it tells me to add the wort to 3 gallons of cold water - does it have to be like refrigerator...
