    bru'n water vs. brewer's friend

I have used brewers friend for the simplicity and have seriously wondered about this. posting mainly to follow the discussion. None of the beers I've made using BF's water calculations have been bad, I tend to shoot for 5.4 for many beers and 5.5-5.6 for stouts. and it seemed to be accurate for...

Oh yea there is no issue with using pellets. from my read of the two articles dry hopping removes a lager portion of iso-alpha-acids than originally expected Dry hopping with pellets contributes a large portion of that lost bitterness through the absorption of hunulinones Pellets contain more...

The "Waiting for the Next Giveaway" Speakeasy

in part yes, the crushing of the lupulin glands when pelletizing oxidizes some of the alpha-acids creating additional humulinones which adds back some bitterness during dry hopping. I wonder if whole hops or pellets removes the same amount of iso-alpha-acids during dry hoping. I'll need to...

The "Waiting for the Next Giveaway" Speakeasy

I have always used pellets as well. But the two articles from MBAA show that during dry hopping the iso-alpha-acids are reduced and humulinones are absorbed. humulinones are less bitter. this is not a bad thing but it shows that dry hopping actually reduces bitterness. Humulinones are in...

I think an exBeeriment is in order for Dry hopping Pellets vs. whole hop. as I have learned the humumlinone content is almost double in pellets. https://hopsteiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/TQ-53-1-0227-01.pdf

MBAA Article - Dry Hopping and it's Effects in the IBU test and Beer Bitterness

I always attributed the dry hop compounds to aroma and some flavor but did not recognize effects of the bittering contribution of the Humulinones as it also stripped away the more bitter iso-alpha-acids. But this would explain why some of my heavily dry hopped IPAs seem more like APAs. I also I...

    An Embarrasment of Hops

Thanks for the advice, being a single parent those hours would make life much easier, I over think and over engineer, so I'll need to research. but sounds like a nice retirement while brewing out my remaining days. But for now I am taking a harder route and and if we win the proposal bid I will...

I've used 2 year old pellets with only a 5% increase in Qty and they worked out fine. Not sure if it was because AA% had decreased or my love of Bitter increases.

Posted this link in the brew science section, https://hopsteiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/TQ-53-3-0808-01.pdf I like how it shows how the IBU test will show higher IBUs yet the perceived bitterness will be less after Dry-hopping.

Just came across an Interesting article from Master Brewing Assoc. of the Americas (MBAA - QT-3 2016) on the effects of dry hopping, IBU, and perceived bitterness. IBU vs High Performance Liquid Chromatogpaphy (HPLC) https://hopsteiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/TQ-53-3-0808-01.pdf...
