Bottling my first batch any advice?

Two weeks is probably good, but it's best to follow the advice and make sure fermentation is done. If it tastes like flat beer, you are good to go. If it still tastes sugary or sweet, there is more fermentation to be done. It is recommended to use a hydrometer for original and final gravity...

How many gallons of Homebrew in 2012?

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just started fermentation of 5 gallons of AHS Belgian Wit... Mmmmmm

Why or how did you get into homebrewing?

I've always loved beer, all different types really. After I graduated college, I realized I needed a hobby to help fill all the extra time. Being an engineer, I like to know how things work. I always wondered how beer was made. So I researched around, bought a Mr. Beer kit, made some batches...

    Florida temperature

I agree with the above posts. If you want to start controlling your temperature of fermentation (which is recommended), you can do it pretty cheaply by what petey mentioned. Place the fermenter into a large cooler or bathtub and keep the water temperature of the cooler/tub stable by using frozen...

    HBT Newbie (sorta)

Welcome to the boards :D Much like you, I lurked around for a while before joining. This place is such a great resource and everyone is helpful. Best of luck in your upcoming electric kettle brew :mug:

Poll: How do people aerate their wort?

I also just use a large sanitized slotted spoon and stir like a madman for a couple minutes.

Tips on keeping the Mrs. happy

This has been a fun thread to read :mug: Lots of good suggestions here for keeping SWMBO happy. I brew in the kitchen and she doesn't mind at all, but I make sure to clean up after myself and try to leave the kitchen looking very clean. I'm lucky mine enjoys pretty much any type of beer...

    Original Gravity Seems Low

Good to know! Thanks guys :) IffyG, glad you experienced similar things. I have brewing equipment from AHS, and take my gallon-readings from the side of the plastic fermenter bucket. Maybe it is slightly off.. I'll probably just fill to 5 gallons next time too. A slightly stronger beer never...

    Original Gravity Seems Low

I am brewing a 5-gallon batch of an extract wheat beer (bought the kit from Austin Homebrew Supply). I followed instructions to a T, but my original gravity reading was 1.037 (actually 1.036 but adjusted based on the calibrated temperature of the hydrometer), while the instructions for the...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Thanks petey and Justi! I plan on upgrading all my stuff pretty soon, so I think the easiest thing for me to do for now would be to follow petey's advice, which is preparing the sugar in some boiling water and add to the fermenter and gently stir before bottling. If that's a reasonable approach...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I'm still using the Mr. Beer kit, and I'm about to bottle my next batch of beer. I've done a couple batches and typically follow the directions to a T, except I let it ferment a few weeks, and carbonate/condition in the bottles for over a month. My last batch seemed severely under-carbonated...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Oooh... thanks Justibone, you have been infinitely helpful. I'll peruse my local grocery stores and Wally World (per recommendations on this site) in an attempt to grab a free bucket in the near future. Chris6, I'm certainly no veteran, but if you're still relatively new to the game and like...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Ahh.. I guess I figured carboys seemed popular among a lot of brewers. Why do you think it's overkill... because it's really heavy and expensive for just fermenting? If that's the case, I think I do see your point - it's much cheaper to get some plastic buckets. One thing.. I do like smaller...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Ahh crap :( Well I figured as much... I guess now I'll have to decide whether I want another Mr. Beer fermenter, or to change to something like a glass carboy. Might be a good time to upgrade..

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

So I'm still pretty new to this whole gig, and have a question. I brewed my next batch of beer today, and as I was sanitizing my Mr. Beer fermenter, I noticed a small scratch on the inside. I've heard this is a bad thing, because bacteria will nestle in the crack and could harm the fermentation...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Thanks Hatchet and Justi. I think I'll give extra DME a shot in future batches to see the difference from the booster. I also ordered some better mixes from Amazon that come with two cans of malt instead of one. Maybe they'll be more like what I'm looking for :) And yeah.. I am pretty...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

My first batch of MrB turned out great! I had a beer after the 2-week conditioning mark, and another after the 3-week conditioning mark. Significant difference in taste.. it was almost slightly cidery at two weeks but that went away for the most part after another week. I'm going to let it sit...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Yeah, I could see that. When I was bottling, it was taking a realllly long time because of the slow pour rate out of the spigot. And I agree.. not having a locking spigot makes it a bit annoying :)

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Haha, I'm impressed completegeek. I just joined up here a few weeks ago too.. I read about 30 pages worth in this thread but couldn't make it any further :) Nice to hear that using the bottling wand helped out, Chris. I was reading about how you were thinking about doing that. I just bottled...
