What are these worms eating the cones?

The smaller is alive and I think is a younger version of the larger specimen next to it, which is dead. [/IMG] Very small bugger. [/IMG] They spin a weak cocoon on the hop cone and attach to a near by cone or leaf and then munch away. [/IMG] The lupulin gets exposed and I would...

    Precipitating out bicarbonates

Madison has hi carbonate levels, something over 300 ppm of something or another which makes for nasty pale ales and IPA's but decent stout & porters. I used the method in Palmer's book How to Brew were you add some kind of mineral( calcium carbonate,1 tsp per 3-5 gal, but, if total...

lagering in chest freezer - regulator required?

Well, if you can figure out a way to keep a chest freezer from freezing with out a temp. control than yes you don't need it. Lagering takes place between 32-35 degrees F in most cases and the freezer wants to go below that temp. with on board settings. I'd sure like to save $40-$60 if you...

Let's talk about Foam Control drops (aka Fermcap)

Fantastic stuff! I love using it in my starters. No more burned hand, peeling skin, from boil overs. I dump whole starter into wort so I think I do get carryover to fermentation and I don't get nearly the blow off I would get without fermcap. Good bye blow off hose! Yee Haaa!

Anyone above the 40th parallel... You are all killing your hop plants!

FWIW, All four of my hops. (cascade, brewers gold, Mt. hood & cenntenial) from last year are sprouting already. Madison Wi area. Put 6 more in the ground last sunday in a canopy arrangement. Yes, I do believe these are hardy plants.

    Star San

Oh, as long as it stays under a ph of 3.5 IIRC. I got a batch of starsan going on 3 or 4 weeks now. Just keep it sealed from the air and it will last a good long time. I usually keep it until it gets discolored and/or lots of floaty material. Great stuff.

    ALWAYS stress the signature requirement

All very reasonable, sound points. Completely agree. Believe me, all the driver wants to do is secure the current package and get on to the next stop. If your front porch is not secure enough then the hassle of getting your signature is a whole new game. Do you want to deal with the...

Thank the Ethanol Hoax for higher malt prices

Aren't we just trying to play catch up with Brazil? They have had great success, according to news articles I've read in the past, using cane sugar and or beet(?), not positive about the beet sugar. Is regular sugar that much more efficient than corn sugar?

Growing Hops in Colder, Shorter Summer

New york was at one time a prime hops growing state. Albeit, IIRC, back in the mid 1800's. Just like Wisconsin, before mildew and other diseases forced the cultivation of them westward to drier climates. The cascade i did last year did very well for 1st year. I really hope it lasted the...

Where to go in Portland, OR for beer

Great beer town. Hit 12- 15 brewpubs. The New old lompoc had a wonderful Helles. Oh man, that beer still haunts me a week later. Bridgeport does a kick arse stout on nitro. I really wish I would have tried one of there samplers of all the beers. The interior has changed a lot from when I...

Green Beer... What does this mean????

Ageing helps to clarify too. I've been visiting some brewpubs in Portland, OR and it seems "green" is the "in" way to serve beer...or they just don't have the time and/or capacity to age. Being a home brewer I feel that I can make something of a judgement call on such matters.

    Greetings from Madison!

Welcome madtown brotha! This is a great place to learn and get help. I've learned so much from HBT. I've had problems with pale ales, IPA'S coming out with nasty hop harshness. Have you noticed anything similar? Maybe your not on city water....
