How do you get a beer in the NHC?

Ribbons (well, medals really) are why I compete in NHC though. Just about every other competition I've entered has been for the fun of it. But not NHC. To each their own; just sayin' NHC isn't where I'd look if trying to get into competing for fun. But others have covered the many...

    Head Space troubles

I do the same as Maylar, or if the volume is fairly small, I'll top off with a bottle or two of a previous batch of mead. The latter works especially well when I've made a melomel with a ton of fruit; a little Trad on top dilutes to sane levels.

The king is dead, long live the king! Congrats to Bell's Two Hearted

ah, the annual "Homebrewers list their favorite beers" issue. Some good ones there.

    Minnesota Homebrew Con 2017

Huh, I don't remember anything like that about San Diego. I recall there several to a little over a dozen people there at any time, I talked to perhaps three of them, and most people seemed to be engrossed in a Brulosophy experiment. I wouldn't really consider it a success from what I saw...

    Bad score, really bad score

the worst score I've ever received, 14.5, came on what I consider the best beer I've ever made. Sometimes (stuff) happens and sometimes the judges are wrong. *shrug* I also don't really agree with some of the terms that go along with the BJCP score ranges. "Good (21 - 29): Misses the mark...

So first competion is in the books.

The comment on bitterness would be fine if they also explained in what way it wasn't what they expected from the style. Almost all my feedback is style-related if there isn't an obvious overwhelming flaw.

My ribbons arrived today. I'm generally one day of shipping from CO, so some of you might take a day or two longer. Cheers Michael

    2017 Homebrew Con - Who's going?

Tuesday - Sunday. I'll be at the KCBM booth on Club Night. As we're in the land of 10,000 Mead Makers Of The Year, I'm making it mostly about mead this year, but I'll have beer, cider, and wine to share too. A few have requested I bring some Mead-hattan or Mead-jito; we'll see what I've got...

    National Homebrew Competition

personal stats: I've advanced 3 lagers to the Finals, all were rebrewed long before I got feedback; two of them I ended up sending the older one to Finals. All three got medals. This year I've got a non-lager in there, but it's an aged beer. Not rebrewing. my ciders and meads are all...

    Grape Cider?

Previous several replies look good. More details if op gets them will help. I agree, I'd probably get concord grape juice - my recollection is gravity is bit higher than apple, like 60 instead of 50 gravity points but check it to be sure - and raise to 75-ish with frozen concentrate. Ferment...

Does anyone else think it unfair those later regions got to cold condition for weeks longer than my rushed, green, estery beer? ...Ok, I don't really think that. Just illustrating we can spin this in any number of ways. I picked a region whose schedule and judge pool worked for me. By the...

    Grape Cider?

hey man let's start over. Let's talk about this grape cider you liked. Did it seem low alcohol, or anywhere near the alcohol level of wine? How sweet was it? Did it taste both of apple and grape, and would you say either tasted like a table apple or eating grape? Or a more nuanced wine-like...

    Grape Cider?

You asked about a commercial grape cider, which I assume was apples and grapes. Then you asked if you can substitute grapes for apple, in a recipe that includes just apples and sugar, which leaves you with just grapes and sugar Then you used the words "pure grape cider" which again suggests...

    Grape Cider?

"Pure grape cider" - most of us call that wine. I mean, cider *IS* a wine, made with apples instead of grapes. So, yes, you can make grape wine.

First Try at Cider: Fast Ferment Method

quite a bit of hyperbole here, most specifically the "accepted by all" one can make cider quickly. One can make cider slowly. Depending on the style I'm making and the apples/juice involved, one method is sometimes better than the other. My best New World cider blends are made very...

    Is "heated" honey ok?

side note: anyone got a great way to get the amount you want out of a 5gal bucket of honey, without a mess? ...I bought a big bucket of honey once. Once.

    National Homebrew Competition

Indy's best cider person was sick, so they were unable to finish one cider category on Saturday. That is all that is left and the organizer, who is on cider exam committee, will finish that this week. FWIW I'm told every judge in Indy was BJCP My friends and I did well; will wait for...

What is the lowest score you've ever medaled with in a comp?

Wouldn't worry about the score, as they float all over the place. Sometimes the judges scoring were wrong. Just getting into that top 3 matters. I think 32 or 33 is about the low for me. At same time I've had 46.5 and 47 not medal, and last weekend in Mazer Cup tied my personal best but got...
