My first kegerator! Lots of questions, expert advice needed

I pour all of my beer at roughly the same psi. There is generally a sweet spot in between 10-14lbs of pressure. Almost any beer will pour at these pressures. I used to work for a distributor and any time I was setting up a keg I always used 12lbs as my starting point and worked from there. I...

You know you're a home brewer when?

You start selling off everything in your garage to make more room for home brew projects. :D When looking at houses the only thing on your mind is where the brewery will be set up, and the best place for the bar will be. Thank you craigslist, now I have all the room I need... for now.

    Bad mash efficiency

The reason it matters is because efficiency = cost savings, and if you want to do a really big beer your equipment might not have the extra room for all the extra grain. It would bug me if I knew 40% of the grain I bought went out the window. :( But I do agree if the beer is good and you...

    Bad mash efficiency

I use the Blichman auto-sparge makes it easy to ad the same amount of water as you are taking out. One less thing to think about :rockin:

Just finished first all grain brew..

Good job! Feels good doesn't it! :rockin: I wish my first AG batch did that well. I have often wondered when the police are going to show up to my house from a "meth Lab" reporting LOL.

    Bad mash efficiency

how long do you sparge for? When I first started all grain I would draw off wort as fast as I could... I quickly found that was a bad plan, I was getting low efficiency 45-55% range. Following some advice from the LBS I started sparging for at least an hour, that shot my efficiency way up.

Removing the ball valve (really dumb question)

If it doesn't leak why take it off? :) Cant believe you have never seen a nipple before :D Ppoor humor i know, what can I say... been drinking and brewing

My first kegerator! Lots of questions, expert advice needed

If you are going to stick with the 20lb cylinder I would cut a hole in the side so you have more room for beer :) Then you can use that top shelf for six packs and bombers! I think the reason they only painted one side is they probably ran out of paint and said F it. lol My kegerator doesnt...

    Bad mash efficiency

I fly sparge and am getting about 80-85% A few things can cause this. Water temps, Speed of sparge, and poor grain crush. Can you give some details on your process? I grind my own grain and have my barley crusher set to 35 thousands. Then I fly sparge for at least an hour. Seems to work well...

My first kegerator! Lots of questions, expert advice needed

Personally I would stick with the 20lb tank. Its amazing how fast you can go through it if you get a small leak. Plus if you plan on keeping 3-4 beers on tap that's the way I would go. I had a 5lb tank given to me and I traded it for a 20lb as soon as I emptied it, I just had to pay a little...

    Too much beer?

When I used to work for a distributor I would bring home beer on a weekly basis.... My wife used to get so mad at me. "Why the hell are you bringing home more beer, you have a closet full" :tank: It was a good problem to have let me tell you. Now she just complains about the bottom shelf of...

    Problems with stout

NO! you will end up with shaken kegy syndrome. I did that to one of my kegs once...... The resulting foam that poured was much harder to get over than the flat beer. :mug:

    Sanitizing your bottles...

Here is what I do Make sure the bottle is clean with hot water/ pbw soak (if necessary) I then fill a tub with star san and dunk the bottles till the fill up. After letting them sit for a few I empty the star san and put them back in the box they came in and fill. I typically fill 12-24...

Single-tier layout - Right to left or left to right?

I would think it depends on where it is going to sit... if you need to have more room on the right to work then... Left to right? I dunno I guess I never thought of it but when I brew I go right to left :D But then I have more work area to the left.

Should I feel guilty buying online and not local?

I would say I am bout 50/50/ I get grain and hops/yeast and this and that's from the LHBS and most of my equipment online. I did buy some of my equipment locally as well. Here is my thing, this is a great hobby and had the LHBS shop not been there I might still not be doing it today. It was...
