First BIAB - really low efficiency - tips for next time?

How fine did you crush your grain and how long did you mash? Were any water additions or pH corrections used?

200 or 400 micron Brew Bag?

I believe the polyester multifilament fabric called Voile used by Wilser has ~210 micron openings. I have used a Wilser bag and hoist for several years when I want to BIAB.

Financials of Kegging- Am I Missing Something??

You can do it cheaper but if you like kegging you'll eventually be spending more. I started with 2 kegs I bought for $5 each, a $50 new 5# CO2 tank and regulator (19 90-something prices) and a one tap jockey box I made for less than $50. Total cost $110. I used that setup for at least 5 years...

    Incompetence at brew shops

I have a simple solution for bad brew shops--I don't come back. When I first moved to my current city 20 years ago there was one terrible brew shop. They had years old hops and yeast, everything in the store was covered in dust, the owner was unhelpful, and they didn't even have a grain mill...

    Ideas on recent 57% efficiency

You're right I screwed that up royally. If you BIAB and don't lauter, would Brewhouse and mash/conversion efficiencies be the same?

    Ideas on recent 57% efficiency

The brewers friend efficiency calculator predicts a 1.091 OG for 13 lbs white wheat and 7.5 lbs pale ale malt with 57% efficiency. Is that close to the OG you measured? How long did you mash? I've found an additional 15 to 30 minutes of mashing over the standard 60 improves my efficiency. I...

Need advice on repairing deck pickets

Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone. The pickets are definitely pressure treated wood. They are in great shape as the deck is about 25 years old. I just need to reinstall them where the original nail used to hold them in place, usually the bottom one, has deteriorated. The dark brown...

Need advice on repairing deck pickets

My backyard deck has these odd pickets which are a pita to repair. Over time the bottoms of them become detached and most have been fixed with a screw diagonally through them into the bottom support railing but that is a tricky procedure for me so they are still straight after the repair. A...

    full volume mash with herms

I have combined BIAB with my 3 vessel herms system. I put the BIAB bag in my cooler mash tun and lifted it to separate the grain from the water. It was just an experiment to see if I could improve my efficiency. Spoiler alert: it didn't because I can't do a really fine grain crush.

    60% Efficiency

Like the experts have already posted your crush is likely the main culprit wrt low efficiency. Other smaller factors imo include making sure you eliminate dough balls in your mash mixture via thorough mixing and making sure you get as much sugar out of the mashed grains as you can via a long...

    Equipment for BIAB

I use a 15.5 gallon keggle to BIAB 10 gallon batches. If I'm going to mash more than 20 lbs or so I will do a pour-over-the-bag sparge to get the volume up to an appropriate starting point. I use generic Fermcap and never have boilovers. I've considered getting a nice 20 gallon SS pot but the...

    Homebrewing Progression

That is a very astute list. Maybe add 8. Patience as that helps me in almost every brewing phase but particularly in fermentation.

Best grain mill in your opinion?

I am going to upgrade my JSP Maltmill to an adjustable model as soon as it dies. Unfortunately I have used it over 20 years and it is still going strong so its probably going to outlive me.

Switching from DME to All Grain.. BIAB?

Sparging is just about as effective with room temp water so you don't need a separate HLT. Many people do a dunk sparge where they lift the bag and put it into a bucket with water. Optionally you can put something under the bag to keep it off the bottom of the bucket. If you want hotter water...

BIAB Disadvantages to go with the Advantages thread.

It is possible to overcome some of the limitations presented above with BIAB but in my case when I did so I didn't see any/enough improvement in the output to warrant doing them regularly. I have a 3 vessel natural gas herms system where I can control the mash temp with a PID. A few times I've...

where to buy a few pounds of hops?

I've bought pounds from Yakima Valley within the last couple years and always had good experiences.

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

I've owned 3 Wilser bags over the years. The first I nearly destroyed on my own when it snagged while hoisting it out of my keggle. I can still use it but I had to sew about a 6 in long repair into it which looks like something Igor would have created while on a hangover. Later I took...
