Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

My 20+ year old JSP Maltmill finally stopped crushing. This model uses a very simple mechanism to move both rollers. You crank or use a drill to move one roller and there's a band around the other which touches the powered roller causing both to turn. See picture below which helps explain the...

Survey: Lets hear why you prefer Propane over Electric Brewing

Just dropping in to add that 20# propane refills are $9.99 at Costco.

    If you could start over...

Moving all my brewing activities outside the kitchen and outside the house altogether reduced a lot of brewing-inspired relationship stress even though my wife has always been a supporter of the hobby. Kitchen boilovers are one of the worst (but not THE worst) results we've suffered through...

Opening the fermenter to check gravity?

https://tilthydrometer.com/ If it really is that important to you a tilt will give you real time temp and gravity readings. You will be shocked at how quickly final gravity is reached on most ales--I was at least.

    16 year old hops

I logged into Morebeer and found the order from September 2004. It is interesting to look at how much prices have increased since then. The 1lb of Fuggles was $15 then and is now $21.99. All of the dry yeast I bought then including lager yeast was less than $2 a package. I'm not sure what I...

    16 year old hops

We had a fridge die this weekend and as I was cleaning out its freezer I found this package of Fuggles hops that I'd completely forgotten existed. The date of origin comes from the fact that its labeled as from Beer, Beer, and More Beer which changed its name to just MoreBeer in 2004 and also...

PSA - Stop lifting your heavy kettle. Clean more efficiently. Save your back!

This discussion of winches makes me think of my system for putting fermenters with 10+ gallons of wort into chest freezers. It involves a Harbor Freight manual engine lift hanging from a security gate roller on a bar. I've since bought a bigger freezer and replaced that fermenter, which was...

5 World of Beer franchises coming to Alabama

77 World of Beer locations are now down to 50 and the only Alabama location still open is in Tuscaloosa. I've been to the Pensacola WoB and thought it had good but pricey selection with decent pub food. However there are many local places higher than it on my goto restaurant list.

WTF is this world coming to....

Maybe it was returned to the store by the estate of the first purchaser, may they rest in peace.

    Commercial Beer Quality

In my pretty non-beer-geek southern town over the last 2 years we've had 4 microbreweries and a brewpub open where we went from almost no brewery competition to quite a bit of it. The first micro to open started off having their beer contract brewed at a larger established brewery in another...

    Tired of crappy yeast

AFAIK both Fermentis and Danstar set best use dates 2 years from the date of manufacture and both say their dry yeast is still perfectly usable long after the best use date if unopened It's a best use date not an expiration date. I've used 6 year old US05 that was kept in a freezer and it...

How to make big ice blocks for chilling?

My chilling procedure for 10 gallon batches 1. pre brew day freeze three 1 gallon milk jugs filled with water. Luckily we have a spare fridge in our garage, otherwise I would go buy a couple large bags of ice at Publix for $4 each. 2. on brew day, 15 minutes before the end of the boil put the...

Hoist point for bag lift, advice needed please

Yes exactly that. I understand the cost concern as I bought my ladder well before starting to use it to BIAB so it wasn't an extra brewing expense. They do come in handy though. If buying one to BIAB you could probably get a shorter cheaper ladder. I don't have to use the top steps on mine...

Hoist point for bag lift, advice needed please

I have to add a vote for getting a nice quality, sturdy ladder. The picture is of a 10+ year old 18' Gorilla ladder which now runs about $180. It folds up to not much bigger than a 6' wooden step ladder. In addition to 10 gallon BIAB (that's 27 lbs of grain in the bag plus absorbed water) I...

    Self Restraint????

I try to wait until 5 before having one from the keezer and I usually make it until noon at least. I keep 10 ounce cups next to the keezer and fill them about 1/2 way several times per day, however I drink a 10 ounce cup of water in between each beer. It does add up but at least spreads out...

Punching hole in bag for kettle side return port

Couldn't you put a silicone hose on the return port and feed the other end up through the opening in the bag? That seems less likely to lead to unintended bad consequences than cutting a hole in the bag.

Drill scrubber attachment to clean a keggle?

Thanks gentlemen. Both ideas have merit but I think I will first try the oxyclean soak as it appeals to my lazy and cheap personality traits. I will try to collect immersion chiller output on my next brew in buckets to at least get some double use of the cleaning water.

Drill scrubber attachment to clean a keggle?

I use a keggle when I biab and also as part of a 3 vessel system I built. Cleaning it is probably my least favorite part of the brewing process and consequently it could be cleaner. When I get motivated enough I use a green kitchen scrubber pad and some Barkeepers Friend to clean off the...

First BIAB - really low efficiency - tips for next time?

I have a fixed gap mill so I double crush, mash 90 minutes, use water and pH additions, and pretty consistently get 78-79% efficiency when I do BIAB 10 gallon batches. I also let my bag hang over the kettle during the boil but I have to squeeze the bag and sparge with about 1 gallon of water...
