Anything to know before using an immersion chiller?

Triple check the hose clamps. I replaced my hoses before my last batch and the test run went good. I think the heat softened them up slightly and mine had a slow drip when i started the water. Needed just a little more to stop the drip once the hoses were up to temp.

    Star san users

I do this. Except my bucket is from Lowe's. I make a 2 1/2 gallon batch, which is easy, just one capful and you're done. I fill up a spray bottle straight out of this, which is handy for pretty much everything because I'm always spraying stuff down in the process. I use regular water, so it...

    Question on Secondary Fermentation

+1 I'm skipping secondary for the first time with this batch I have in primary now. I'm sure you have, but if not, search Revvy's thread on it. I needed some reassurance because of recent back surgery and didn't want to rack anything if I didn't have to. Less steps + better beer = a win in my...

    100% homegrown

I read this whole thread and I'm very impressed by the time and labor you've put into this. I thought staring at my primary for a month and not touching it was patience!

what kind of brewing gadget would you like to see?

My LHBS had something like this and it worked on my kettle. I used it in combination with whirlpooling on my last batch, and it worked perfectly.

Can I open my fermenting bucket?

I third the glass carboy. That's what a had to do due to curiosity. Just be prepared for what you are about to see....that first 48 hours looks like a dirty lava lamp.

    First batch soon

John Palmer changed a few things you should know since the online "How to Brew" either in the 3rd edition book or later on his radio show. His ratios of DME/water for the yeast starter are completely wrong online, it was a typo. I use the metric 10/1 ratio. 1000ml water/100g DME for instance...

    Fish Smell in Cooler

I agree with Oxyclean. I forgot a watermelon we didn't get a chance to eat one weekend in the family cooler (which gets way less TLC than my mash tun!). Worked like a champ and it had been several weeks/months with rotten fruit in it. Nice score on a big cooler.

    Carboy is overflowing

No problem! Just remember to check that skinny line from time to time to make sure it doesn't clog. In the future something like mux has setup is ideal, plus a 6.5 gallon carboy won't lose as much brew.

    First Batch, need clarification

Oh, and don't forget the most important step to brew day.... RDWHAHB :mug:

    First Batch, need clarification

Sounds like a pretty successful first batch. Congrats! It gets smoother, really. From what you describe, the beer will be just fine, no deal breakers. And yes your funnel sucks. I've got the same one I think. They make better ones that rest sturdy in the neck without sealing off the air. I might...

    Carboy is overflowing

I did this once in a pinch. Since it's late and I'm sure a 1" blow off tube isn't falling from the sky...use your racking tube, soften the end with hot water, sanitize and it will slip onto the center tube of the 3 piece airlock, just take the other 2 pieces out. Just watch it to make sure it...

A couple questions before Brew Day

This might be painfully obvious, but I've made this mistake...shake prior to taking your gravity reading if you top off with water. You want the real number, not a diluted area around the top or a heavy number from the bottom.

    Brewing Supply list help?

+1 That's what I did and they are really the perfect bottles to re-use. The only drawback is if/when you enter into a competition they won't take bottles with markings. (Samuel Adams is in raised lettering around the neck), but you can pick up a 12 of plain brown ones at the LHBS for that...

    Netflix

Yes, Netflix is awesome and worth it. I signed up to stream through my PS3 in the U.S. when it was first released here. Some lag during heavy traffic in the evenings, etc. I noticed you are in Dublin and they just released it there. To answer your question, Netflix responded very quickly over...

New staff members of my brew crew...

Sir, you have been prosted. I'm glad those beautiful dogs got adopted. Is that your real license plate? If so, I missed my opportunity since I'm also in SC. LOL.

    Mr. Beer Goes Horribly Wrong

Exactly how I started. Of course each upgrade improves your beer, 5 gallons, all-grain, etc., the Mr. Beer starter recipes are still better than Bud Light. Plus, you made it. Lol, not sure about vintage 1996 Mr. Beer after seeing this video. I'll be looking forward to when you join both...

Wyeast vs. White labs vs. dry

This is very good advice. This batch I'm doing contains a bunch of firsts from advice gained on this thread. I'm doing a month primary/no secondary thanks to Revvy, using Bernie Brewer's awesome write-up to wash my WLP008 at the end of that. At the end of the day I will want some insurance for...
