    Major Buzzkill

Some people just don't like really bitter beers....I know I don't. I'm just not a big fan of them, I stick with beers like hefeweizens and belgians, or things a little less hoppy like pale ales. Not everyone is a hop head :drunk:

    2nd AG, Hefeweizen

I'm pretty sure I know why the efficiency was so bad...I used a 1 qt to 1 pound ratio, and not enough sparge water, because I was attempting to do a pseudo all grain, where I could still boil it on the stove, but have to add a pound or two of DME. It didn't work out well, only about 50%...

    2nd AG, Hefeweizen

Hello friends, My first AG experience went well, despite a terrible efficiency, and this time I really want to try to make a good hefeweizen, since it is probably my favorite style. Here is what I'm thinking. 4.5# Malted Wheat 4.5# Malted Barley .5# Carapils Wyeast 3056 Bavarian Wheat...

    Sediment and flakes in bottles

Cool, sounds like a good idea....will it still siphon with that on there though? Should I put it on the end inside the fermenter or the end in the bottling bucket?

    Sediment and flakes in bottles

No unfortunately I do not have one, so I usually leave my brew in the primary for close to 2 weeks. However, generally when I open the primary to siphon, many flakes are floating on top and throughout, not having settled on the bottom, so I figured it wouldn't make a huge difference using a...

    Sediment and flakes in bottles

Hey all, So on my last brew I did a Belgian golden ale, and I finally made a beer that had good clarity while chilled. However, I then noticed small flakes of something, presumably hops since they are solid, floating in many of the beers. I'm not sure if I've always had these and just never...

    Funny Smell after Baking Bottles

I always use the oven for sterilizing bottles. To me it seems like the easiest way when you have to do 50 12 oz bottles.

    Buying water

I'm always amazed how much difference it makes when you filter vodka through.

    Stuck Fermentation Thread #879

Well, I definitely don't think the batch is scrapped. Even though the final gravity isn't what you wanted and the beer might not taste like what you wanted, you still have about a 4% ABV beer on your hands with a FG at 1.036. It might actually still taste really good. You just now have a...

70-quart Maxcold Ice Cube for MLT?

That looks like a nice cooler since its cube shaped. However, I recently bought a 5 gallon Gott style cooler from home depot for $19. That's only 20 quarts, but most sources say you can get enough grain in there for a 5 gallon brew of almost any style, minus things like barley wine. Since...

    Partial Mash vs All Grain

Just my two cents, but one of my brother's friends has won a few competitions, and he does only all extract and steeping specialty grains. I would say that its possible that many of these people who say all grain is better saw an improvement in quality simply from experience. A good brewer can...

Got a Gott -- AG here I come!

I got my igloo Gott just last week at Home Depot for $19. I would think they would be about that price at any Home Depot.

    Lowe's blows: my AG woes

I just made my mash tun two days ago, going with this setup. http://cruisenews.net/brewing/infusion/page1.php Works great, I substituted the rubber stopper (Home Depot didn't have one) with one of the rubber feet for chairs, which basically acts like a hollow rubber stopper. The entire...

Grain - how old is too old?

BYO (Brew your own magazine)'s website says that an airtight bag of crushed grain will keep for 3 months. If yours was still in a bag that was partially closed, I'm sure you're fine with just 5 days.

AG questions with 2 separate boils

Well, what I'm saying is, I would only add hops to one of the boils, the larger one. The second boil would have no hops, only the remaining wort from the mash, and I want to boil that for less time, just enough time for the hot break to occur and the proteins to coagulate. Basically I want to...

AG questions with 2 separate boils

Ok, so I decided to switch to AG to save money as well as to improve my beer. I do not, however, have the setup to boil all the wort at once, so I'm going to split it into two separate boils. Most places I've read recommend doing 2 one hour long boils and splitting the hops up among the two...

    Wort Cooling

The way I chill my wort with ice is to soak 4-5 plastic freezer bags in the sanitizing solution. Then its as simple as filling the bags with ice and tossing them in the wort. It works well and will not add any volume to the wort, plus you don't have to deal with sanitizing water and freezing it.

    Birthday Brew

Yeah a pale ale would be good, I'd like to re-try that style since my very first brew was a pale ale and turned out not so great. Any good recipes that you guys like? I'm not a big hop head, so something with moderate IBUs would be good.

    Birthday Brew

So in about a month I'm having friends over for my 22nd birthday, and it just dawned on me that I should definitely brew a batch strictly for the party. Any ideas on a good style and recipe for an occasion such as this? I've already brewed an American pale ale, and oatmeal porter, and an...

    Greetings from Georgia

Hey everyone, My name's Taylor and I'm currently a student at the University of Georgia. I got interested in homebrewing after watching the Good Eats episode about brewing beer. So far I'm on my third brew, my first being an american pale ale (which didn't turn out very well, the bitterness...
