(Probably A) Stupid Question about Grain Blends

It's called extract with specialty grains. It's not partial mashing as you are not truly mashing the grains to convert starch to sugar. While an all grain or partial mash recipie will still use some of these specialty grains in thier mash, what you have just adds color, flavor etc. to your malt...

Euthanized three gallons of beer. Having a pity party.

My second batch was an extract porter brewed in March 2011. It had been bottle conditioning for 11 months. I don’t know if I over primed, it got an infection or what, but every bottle was a gusher. I tried burping each and every bottle, twice. I tried chilling it for 6 weeks, but every bottle...

    I love English ale yeast!

I just racked every single ounce of beer off of an English ale yeast cake and not a single scintilla of yeast/trub went through my auto siphon. The only beer on the yeast cake afterwards was the 1/2 oz left in the tubing when I tossed it back into the fermenter after racking. Flocculation is a...

    Noobs Pointless Post #5.

I began brewing in March 2011. After doing fifteen concentrated boil stove top extracts along comes November and December. Also known as birthday and Christmas. On December 30, 2011 I brewed my first 5g all grain beer with the new brewery. Before I continue, I want you to know I support my...

Newbie - Might try to start brewing

Respectfully, and I do mean respectfully Revvy, I would offer the following rebuttal: You are correct in that there is no shame in brewing small batches. However, I'll bet when you brew a small batch you have 20 gallons of drinkable homebrew on hand. I would submit, that if your homebrew...

Newbie - Might try to start brewing

On brew day, brewing a small batch and brewing a 5g batch will take the same amount of time more or less. You will have to clean larger vessels and bottling (if that is your method) will take a bit longer. But I guarantee you, when you drink the last beer from a small batch you will kick...

Brewing Today: IBU calculations and hop utilization

I love this forum....thanks my peps... The 90 min boil comes from an all grain coverted to extract. So I take it that since I was doing extract I would have been fine with a 60 min boil.

Brewing Today: IBU calculations and hop utilization

Heretofore I have used beer kits to brew with. I’m trying my first extract recipe gleaned from the internet. The recipe calls for the following: Perle: 1oz at 9.2 AAU for 90 mins Cascade 0.8 oz at 3.3 AAU for 15 Cascade 1.2 oz at 3.3 AAU for 5 Cascade 1 oz at 3.3 AAU dry hop So what did...

    Noobs Pointless Post #4.

Today, my wife told me that if I buy her a stand up freezer, I can do what I want with the chest freezer. I'd have taken her right there but we were in a restaurant. For those of you who don't see the golden nuance: I get to spend money on HER thereby collecting the points for spending...

    What about this?

I always scrape my dry ingredients/congealed liquid ingredients back into my wort. I figure if the dry ingredients are stuck to the top of the pot they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing in wort. I’m still learning but I think you should be concerned with the condensation...

    Bottled the first batch

I'll bet your beer turns out great. As you say "pride" in your own beer will also mellow an off flavor or two.

    Noob Secondary Question

Take a reading now. Take a reading in three days. If its the same (and within style range) rack to secondary. Or do what most people here do, don't rack at all. Leave for two, three, dare I say four weeks. Then bottle. Disclaimer: I am an UberNoob. Wait for more experienced replys. But I bet...

    To much Carb any ideas?

I have a batch that is over carbed. Pursuant to a recomendation on this site I took my church key and gently lifted each cap and vented the co2 in the head space. If you are careful the cap will reseal. When I got to the last bottle I was able to do them all again, just that quick. The down side...

    Low OG For Your Consideration.

My LHBS has LME in giant blue barrels. They pour into white plastic containers which they set on a scale. I reuse the same containers as they will credit you with $1.50 if you bring your own LME container. But I must admit, your question intrigues me. Why do you ask?

    Low OG For Your Consideration.

I hear what you are saying, but my noob brain says: Wouldn't shaking for 4 minutes mix the wort and water? My noob brain is also praying that you are correct.
