    Staying Healthy while Brewing

Just to be fair, the OP did ask for other people's personal experiences. It may have evolved into something far uglier, but the original intention of the OP was to hear what other people are doing, not a nutritional science debate. But of course, you know the "right way" as you say, so who am...

    Staying Healthy while Brewing

Wow, this was an interesting read. I think (as in, it's my opinion) that it'll never be a simple formula, especially one that everyone can agree upon. Like I've said before, do what works for you. Genetics plays a role in how your body handles metabolism, and what is the case for some...

    Water Mistake Question

What style was it? Mind listing the recipe details? Grain, hops, yeast? 1.030 may be just fine if it was, say, an English Mild or English Brown. 1.040 sounds pretty mild to begin with, so you may be just fine.

    Water Mistake Question

Don't toss it! Gravity samples will help you determine what steps to take. Do some reading on "blending". You can always brew another batch at a proportionately higher gravity and blend the two beers. But do some research on it first, to know how to do it. Sorry, I don't have any...

    Staying Healthy while Brewing

I do struggle with my weight, but probably in the opposite as most of you guys. I've been pretty small, and wimpy most of my life. Was the smallest guy throughout grade school. Was the smallest guy in basic training. Smallest out of my friends, etc. I usually wear x-small or small shirts...

    So Effing Close

You are right on starsan. I think the general opinion is that starsan (once mixed and diluted) will be effective for quite some time, as long as the pH is at that low threshold. Mixing with distilled water and keeping the mixture free from O2 and sunlight exposure will prolong that shelf life...

    So Effing Close

Also, to add that others have mentioned...the tasting of the sample. Honestly, one of my favorite activities is the hydrometer sample every few days. It's actually an important part of my process. When I ferment, say, a pale ale, and I want main fermentation to set in at 64 degrees over 3-4...

    So Effing Close

QFT. I understand caution for sanitation, but in my opinion (just an opinion!), infection is highly unlikely with just a few drops from a wine/beer thief making it's way back into your carboy, unless you're REALLY unsanitary to begin with, but it sounds like you're not. But, in case you are...

    So Effing Close

With most wine thiefs (thieves?) you can actually insert your hydrometer directly into it, as they are designed for that particular use. Do a quick search on youtube for "How to use wine thief" and you'll find some examples.

    Glass carboy explosion

I've been pretty set on using plastic. I can be clumsy at times, and the thought of carrying 5 gallons of liquid in a glass container seems like a disaster waiting to happen. But, I've never thought it was a ticking time bomb! Bottle bombs? Yeah...but carboy bomb? That's a first for me...

    So Effing Close

Bingo. Wine Thief! I used a turkey baster for a few years while I was only fermenting in buckets. After I started fermenting more than a couple batches at a time, I added some carboys. Realized I needed a better way to pull a sample, because the baster was clumsy to use through the...

    So Effing Close

Couple of pieces I'd like to toss in here that may help you. Others have made some great comments on the importance of yeast pitching rates and temperatures, so hopefully you'll follow their advice. It's great that you are now cooling your wort much quicker. Definitely a step in the right...

How to Better Describe Your Beer - A Simple Framework

First, let me say that I really enjoyed this read. It approaches an often confusing subject from a fairly basic scientific approach. Well done. To mattmille, I mean absolutely no offense. I find your comment a little contradictory of itself, though, unless I misunderstand you, in which case, I...

    BIAB Brewing Primer for Beginners

Really great article, and an excellent way for beginning brewers to venture into new and different ways to brew. I do think, however, that it should be noted that there is a risk involved with double crushing and longer mashes. Double crushed grains have a very large potential to break the...

    Color spots in cooler

Hard water can also cause pink stains on white plastics due to some various metals. However, if the pink stains are accompanied by a thin, slimy film, it could very well be an extremely common type of bacteria that thrives on cold, wet surfaces (like in the bathroom). And they are...

Austin Homebrew This Sounds Like YOUR Accounting Mistake Not Mine!

So you are trying to tell all of us that when you checked out, you agreed to pay the full price and be credited the $40 AFTER payment? That doesn't sound right... Secondly, I wouldn't consider this "loose bookkeeping". How is AHS to know that the gift certificate wasn't rightfully redeemed...

Austin Homebrew This Sounds Like YOUR Accounting Mistake Not Mine!

You know what Airborneguy, I did make a pretty hefty assumption. I have re-read his post, and he doesn't make a claim that he knew. He also doesn't object, either. For what it's worth, I'll give it to you that it was a mistake. A preemptive decision to steal is cognitively far different than...

Austin Homebrew This Sounds Like YOUR Accounting Mistake Not Mine!

Being a retail manager for many years, I'm inclined to believe that the OP is clearly wrong for violating a fairly obvious moral. The way I see it, if I were to "mistakenly" leave a cash register drawer open, and some un-ethical individual was to take $35 out of that register, knowing it did...
