Please help me with my starter kit

Yes, bottles. I plan to get those locally. I have a food safe spoon, and I have a highly accurate thermometer I use for cooking. I also have two glass measuring cups. Why a fish tank aerator and air stone? What is the plastic tubing you're referring to? I have 6' of 3/8" tubing on the...

Please help me with my starter kit

I've read John Palmer's How to Brew, and have done a lot of reading here and on other sites as well. I'm getting ready to brew my first batch. I decided (maybe foolishly) to start with a partial-mash instead of an extract only recipe. I'm going to do an Organic Coffee Oatmeal Stout, because...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Sorry, I think I got a bit confused. The recipe I'm doing is a partial mash (maybe I didn't make that clear), so of the 10.75 lbs. I mentioned earlier 6 lbs. is extract. That means I'll only be mashing 4.75 lbs. of grain, which requires 1.86 gallons of space. So would a 3 gallon pot be enough...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

I need to buy a 7.5 gallon pot but I'm trying to limit my expenses, so if I can do the mashing, sparging and boiling in that one pot (using two smaller pots I already have to heat water for the sparge) then that means I only have to buy one pot right now. That's the idea, at least.

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Thanks for your reply, Deathbrewer. What about mashing/sparging in one pot? This is actually what the instructions for my Organic Oatmeal Stout (from Seven Bridges Cooperative) say to do: What do you think? It seems like utilization might not be as high with this method, but I don't...

How long can liquid yeast be unrefrigerated?

Thanks for getting back to me. Is the process for making a starter with liquid yeast the same as that for dry yeast, i.e. rehydrate with 100 - 110 F water and let stand for a half hour?

How long can liquid yeast be unrefrigerated?

I recently ordered a partial mash kit. It arrived while I was out of town. It contains a pack of liquid yeast, which had a small cold pack attached to it. By the time I got home the yeast had been out of the refrigerator for probably 5 days (including shipping time). How long can liquid...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Thanks a million for this thread. I just came on the forum to look for advice on PM brewing and I'm glad I found this. I'm about to make my first PM. I have an oatmeal stout recipe that calls for 10.75 lbs. of grain. According to the Green Bay Rackers calculator, that will require 4.22...

How are sour beers made? Bockor Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge?

Ah, sounds like I'm better off drinking this beer at The Trappist than making it myself for the time being. Maybe someday... The Wild Brews book seems fascinating. Thanks for your replies.

How are sour beers made? Bockor Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge?

Last night I went to an incredible local pub called in Oakland called The Trappist. They have 20 belgian and specialty beers on tap and more than 160 in the bottle. I tried a beer called Bockor Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge. It was unlike any beer I had ever tasted. Very sour with overtones of...

    Substitutions for organic beer recipe?

Hello everyone, This is my first post. I'm a complete newbie - I have yet to brew my first batch. I just bought John Palmer's How to Brew and am about 3/4 of the way through. On p.136 he gives a recipe for a porter (one of my favorite styles) which involves steeping specialty grains...
