    buying grains in bulk

Where to buy grains in bulk ? Seems much higher than just getting at my local brew store, I pay a buck a pound. With what they call a grain card. $55 for 55lbs, but online it's much more whole, People milling for flavor or cost ?

Who fly sparges ? What's your technique ?

This is what i have been using, I would like to build or buy something that spreads the water evenly across the grain bed, any ideas on a sparge arm build would be greatly appreciated. I often have to move the arm around to prevent channeling, Pain in the butt.

Who fly sparges ? What's your technique ?

OK this helps me, vorlauf is dumping the wort back into the grains ? Of course gently to avoid stirring up the grains, Why do you do this ?

Who fly sparges ? What's your technique ?

Efficiency is not really my concern because i always seem to hit my OG, what i was wondering is what people use as a sparge arm and there exact technique. The only concern i have is temps and technique. I am totally self taught from this forum and a few tips at my local brew store. I normally...

    Experimental container

Look around garage sales and maybe you can find a old pressure cooker with a good seal. drill hole for pop off and fill with starsan mixture. Buddy uses this works well.

Thanks for responding, I feel better about my purchase. I am going to use 4 of them this fall to make a lager and maybe a pumpkin ale for the Holidays. Just need to get some ball lock connectors and use the gas side.

    specific gravity

Are you sparging very very slow, Takes me about a hour to fly sparge 5 gallon batches. Effeciency can be part of the problem you might be having. But in the of my all grain brewing i was sparging way to fast not allowing time for the sugars to settle and also had low OG's But after i slowed the...

    just tested 30 plate chiller

Update ! Plate chiller works great, but not so well with a recirculation system, temps vary a bit to much for continuous temps. Switched to the garden hose and its spot on from 210f to 70f in 6 minutes, cool water temps from a well. Right into the fermentor skipping a step. :D

    just tested 30 plate chiller

Agree ! Thats my intention is straight into the Blichmann and skip a step, Thanks for the tip on running to sanitize, funny i never thought to do that, was thinking i would sanitize with starsan first, but no need to if doing it this way. I do recirculate and just use blue ice packs and what ice...

    just tested 30 plate chiller

Was shocked  I bought a 30 plate chiller 23 series "long version" and just tested 5 gallons of Boiling water, Granted it will cool quicker than wort, but was amazed from the results. I use a 100 qt cooler and a submersible pump, with cool tap water and about half a bag of ice it cooled in...
