    Great Literature not about Beer

Anything by Terry Pratchett, though his Discworld books are really his best. Don't start at the beginning though - I appreciate Rincewind and the beginning as a fan, but I think if I'd started there, I'd just have been... "What is this?" Guards Guards! is a great stepping stone into Pratchett's...

    Help identifying fruit

It's hard to say, but the fruit, color and leaf shape of the tree all look about right for plums. A little late for plums, though, isn't it?

    Hangover cures

Best hangover cure ever. Finding someone to place the catheter can be a bit sketchy, though.

Brewing on a natural gas stove

Oven cleaner works great for getting the black, burned schmoo off the stove top. Lye is your friend. Just make sure you open the windows and turn on the fan.

What got you started in brewing?

I just woke up one day and said, "I think I want to start making my own beer." Of course, I was in the middle of an internship when this happened, and the 60+ hour weeks make doing anything resembling a hobby difficult, so it was another year before I got around to getting started. Actually...

egg powder (pancake mix) plus baker's yeast

Guess who has 2 thumbs and is making banana wine this week? This girl!

Ever regretted a "craft" beer purchase? Why?

Every beer I have ever tried by Flying Dog. I keep falling for the cool labels.

egg powder (pancake mix) plus baker's yeast

Can you use frozen bananas? I've got piles of them in my freezer. Destined to be banana bread someday. But I like wine more than I like banana bread.

    Mixed Drinks

Oh God... that sounds like what we used to make in college. You left out the part about the epic hangovers that stuff could cause. Oy.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

There are people who don't like Stephen Fry?

( advice ) wife doesn't like me home brewing

If you're looking for serious advice, I think you need to actually sit down with your wife and have a discussion about why you enjoy homebrewing. Unless you're really being minimal with your equipment or if you've been doing it long enough, it's not cheaper in the beginning. Like any hobby, it...

French Martini: Vodka, pineapple juice, lemon twist with the Chambord layered onto the bottom.

    No Homebrew....Who is you supplier?

Strangely enough, the local grocery store (Jewel Osco) is the first place I check. They have a "build your own" section, and once in a while there are some real winners in there. Dogfish Head 90 Minute and Stone Levitation made one awesome $10 six pack.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

I may have to give that one a try once I've caught back up on Who. Just found out Red Dwarf is available on Netflix as well. But that is definitely a user-specific recommendation. Probably not for most people.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

If you haven't watched Coupling, it's by far one of the funniest things to come out of British TV in... ever. (Ok, maybe not ever.) But well worth the watch.

Beer experts prefer ales, says this study.

I second that. It's not that I don't like lagers, but when I first started actually enjoying and looking for good beers, there are way more craft beer options if you're drinking ales than lagers. Hence, I'm usually drinking ale. Also doesn't help that I like my beer about as dark as my soul...

I'm so sorry I'm doing this...

Unlikely. Yeast are surprisingly not hardy when it comes to taking its place in the great biosphere. They usually only get a foothold when there is something else going on - immunosuppression, taking long-term antibiotics, etc. Also, as someone pointed out, wrong species of yeast. The chances...

    What are you reading?

Kitty in the Underworld. Gotta read something while I wait for next Discworld to be released.

    The Nice People Thread

I was treating a patient (a dog, FYI) at work who, for reasons unknown, went into sudden liver failure and lost the ability to clot. I treated her on ER, transfused her with plasma, and, 2 days later, she was looking fantastic. But when I checked her clotting times, she'd backslid and wasn't...

    Anyone around Chicago

That would Dona Quixote, but close enough. ;) What time do y'all meet? I may have to come check y'all out, especially since if it's around 7-7:30, that's right around when I get off work.
