    Better than Apfelwein...

I made a batch with 3068 and can comment on the following: 1) Yes, it ferments a lot slower than Montrachet 2) I had to put a blow-off tube in my 6 1/2 gallon carboy because of krausen 3) It finished crystal clear - more so than the Montrachet batch did With that being said, I still...

    Help! Ran out of propane

I ran out of propane once , and I was fortunately able to go to the nearest Home Depot and pick up another tank - I only lost about 30 minutes then proceded to finish my boil. In any event, all was good and I now have 3 propane tanks. As soon as one is empty, I exchange it for another full...

Good corker, good bottles, good corks ?

I use one of these for the meads I make: http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/italian-floor-corker.jpg The same company makes a similar version that will also handle champagne corks: http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/champagne-corker.jpg They sell them at Northern...

    2 day forced carb. Experiences?

Personally, I find a little patience to be very rewarding ...... I have force-carbed in the past and have had to deal with the over-carbing that others have mentioned. Personally, I like to carb at my serving pressure (10 psi) for 7-10 days. Works perfect, no over-carbing, just requires a...

    Stout Faucet Help Needed

Well, I like to carb by using my standard dispense pressure (10 psi ) on my newly kegged beers, be it a stout or non-stout. After 10 days, my beer is properly carbonated with the system I have, and no, I do not have seperate regulators for different styles, etc., etc., - all my beers -...

    When does "brewing" actually start?

I started brewing after I read two books on the subject - Palmer's Learn To Brew, and Daniel's Designing Great Beers - long before I had any equipment, let alone heated up any water ! I voted that I start brewing when I start thinking about my next batch ..... - Gl63

    Stout Faucet Help Needed

This may be a stupid question Ed, but was (is) your friends Guinness clone properly carbed with CO2? You have to carb a stout as you normally would do with a non-stout, disconnect the CO2 line when it is, then use the beer gas to dispense it only. I've made several stouts and they all behave...

Starting my keezer build tomorrow, a collar question

Like others have said, you need to remove the seal if it is attached to the freezer itself and not the lid. Mine was attached to the lid, so it was not a problem. There are many ways to attach a collar and I chose the easiest - I ran a heavy silicone bead around the perimeter and set the...

    Time for secondary?

I rack my ciders out of the primary after 2 months. I then keep them in the secondary for a another 2 months, then tertiary for as long as it takes before I have an empty keg to put it into - ideally another 2 months or so. Personally, I don't think cider is ready to drink for at least 4...

    Time to worry?

Like malkore said ..... a week at 70-75 F will do the trick. I had a similar experience about a year ago and all was fine after getting the temps up a bit. - GL63

digital thermometer - Is it worth it?

I don't know ....... a thermometer is a pretty critical piece of homebrewing equipment, and I consider this one to be indespensible: http://thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/tpen_home.htm By no means cheap, but accurate as hell and extremely durable. Just my .02 ..... - GL63

    A couple of collar questions

I used an 8" collar because I needed to space so I could fit two kegs on the 'compressor shelf', so use whatever size you need for your freezer. BTW, I glued 1/2" foamboard on the inside of my collar for additional insulation. Merry Christmas !!! - GL63

    Fly sparging question

I use a Phil Sparger over a 10 gallon Rubbermaid cooler with a stainless false bottom that I use as my mash tun - it is what came with my Norther Brewer 'Deluxe All-Grain Kit' that I bought. http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/deluxe-ags-10.jpg I do not do a mash-out and...

    Urgent help!!!!!!

Just for future reference ....... Keep a 12" long piece of 1/8" welding rod (or cloths hanger) to run through the fitting you have on your valve. I have a 10 gallon Rubbermaid mash tun and I fly sparge, and I had a stuck sparge a couple batches ago. The 1/8" rod did the trick !!! - GL63
