    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

So, back on whatever the topic is, and since I haven't been drinking yet, my one batch that started to rise again did stop at the 35 psi it reached last Friday. And I did kind of figure that the drop in the fridge was a hot/cold thing, it was just curious that the S04 dropped more that the...

First brew, think i cucked it up already. Help and advice appreciated

Do not stir. If you want any carbonation at all, you'll want to leave your bottles at room temps for a week or so, until your pop bottle is as firm as an unopened one. If you put them into the fridge right away, you will have no carbonation at all. As far as pasteurization is concerned, I am...

Yeah, forgot to make it clear that I don't put it all into the soda bottle. I use 12 oz. flip tops for most, the soda bottle for pressure testing.

Usually when folks rack their stuff, they use a siphon. I do. Many have a bottling bucket, I assumed you may, I do not. Don't pour, please don't. So, I don't do a secondary fermentation unless bottle carbonating counts, lol. What I do is put whatever juice and/or sugar (for 'back...

Your FG is .96? Wow, that's low and that's why it's so dry. You can rack it off into a bottling bucket with some more juice and maybe some priming sugar and bottle it. Bottle an empty soda bottle as well to check for carbonation. Then when plastic bottle firm, cold crash, wait a week and...

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

I think once seeing that someone else actually was using some carbonation measurement device like Maylar, it sent him off on a drinking binge . . . LOL.

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

And today I popped the last bottle of batch one. Fairly flat and sweet. So, this thread had more questions than answers. Reckon I'll chalk it up to those who may come along later to perhaps learn something or nothing from, hehe. I'm going to keep experimenting with bottle carbing for now so...

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

So yesterday afternoon, I took the test bottle of batch one and drank it. Surprisingly, it was fairly well carbonated. But I think I don't like that recipe, it was too sweet. Then last night I popped a bottle of batch two. Wow. Test bottle is up to 35 psi and it actually had very good...

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

I reckon so . . Funny note, both Maylar's and mine were snapped at 23 psi. What are the odds?

It is a method posted by Maylar here before he went to kegging. Let's see if I can post a pic of mine.

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

Thank you so very much for your replies. I'm stumped too. Of course, I'm a bit in the cups so after your warning, I had to go open one just in case. No big 'pop' when opened, no head, but it did maintain some fizz throuout the drinking. And for me boohoo I got some yeast in the pour. But, it...

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

So, any idea why the EC-1118 batch is now rising? I think now it's up to 33-34 psi and still in the fridge. And for kicks, the test bottles are 16.x oz Mountain Dew bottles from six packs at wally world. These two have the same headspace between them, a bit more than the flip tops.

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

Hmm, might be on to something there. I take great care to make sure my flip tops have just enough head space for the bottling wand, but my test pressure bottles with the gauges, no so much care.

    Seeking yeast recommendations

Yes EC-1118 does strip away a bit of flavor, but I kind of like the finished product. Makes the store bought hard cider taste like some over sugary mixed up force carbonated goo. Sure it is a bit tart, but it has a nice little 'warm' finish to it. And I always carbonate my stuff. Or try to...

Between 66 and 69 room temps, about 33-37 in the fridge.

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

I kind of figured it would drop, but why one drops ten psi and the other only 3-4? I should add that batch one after going back to 30 psi, it dropped back to about 23 back in the fridge.

    Bottle carbonation readings conundrum

Two ciders, both with 3q Great Value Apple juice to start. I use 12 oz swing tops. Maybe just a story of two yeasts. One: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp Pectic, 1 tsp Nutrient, 2 grams S-04 OG 1.065, FG 1.02 bottled with 16 oz of juice and 2 Tbsp+1tsp sugar. Twelve days later they finally reached 28...

How long for Nottingham to clear?

Then it must have to do with the cooler temps this time of year. My earlier batches were done earlier this year when the temps were warmer. I'm going to take a reading and taste test tonight and see what's what.

Welcome to the site! I'm going to second the recommendation to read the sticky about simple cider recipes. When I saw bleach, I thought, no that's not too good. StarSan is a great sanitizer that doesn't really require rinsing at all. Also, I think your starting gravity should be at least...
