    Freezer for fermentation.

I'm looking to get a freezer(cheap) that can hold two 6 gallon carboys(or buckets) that I'll be able to control the temps during fermentation. Would something like...

Trying to do my own calculations but confused on the terminology.

Hmm, so there is no single place that seems to have them all(grain, hops, yeast). Different places have different info. Maybe I do this as a side project.

How accurate are repeat recipes when the alpha value varies?

http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/brewing-ingredients/hops/cascade-hop-pellets-8-oz.html OR http://www.midwestsupplies.com/challenger-uk-pellet-hops.html It seems like most places don't give a solid number

How accurate are repeat recipes when the alpha value varies?

I'm reading over hops ingredients and they all say things like: Typical alpha: 4.5-7.0% OR Average 7.2% Does a range like this have a big affect on the outcome of the beer? From what I've read you really need to know the actual value to make consistant beer.

Trying to do my own calculations but confused on the terminology.

But how can I figure that out without software? Is there a table somewhere? Can I tell from the name, the L value?

Trying to do my own calculations but confused on the terminology.

So first I'm trying to calculate out the OG. I'm following a recipe so I know what the OG should be. Here are the ingredients from the kit and the values I was able to find out about them off the same site. - 0.25 lbs CaraPils (1.5° L) - 0.125 lbs Special Roast (50° L) - 2 lbs Wheat dry...

Bubbles stopped and head died down...

No idea on the yeast, it was dry and came from this kit: http://www.brewersbestkits.com/pdf/1006%20English%20Pale%20Ale.pdf

Bubbles stopped and head died down...

It's cold, I'm waiting for my heater so it's been sitting at around 62-63 since conception. Could this stop/slow the fermentation?

Bubbles stopped and head died down...

okay, I don't mind letting is sit there I'm just worried that if it did stop 4 days in that there might be something I can do to save it instead of waiting 2 weeks to find that out.

Bubbles stopped and head died down...

So at about the 4 day mark the bubbles stopped coming and the head that was growing died down to nothing. Am I still fermenting? Is there a way I can easily check?

    Heating element for fermentor box.

Space heaters scare me, I don't want to leave it unattended for fear it would catch fire or something. The FermWrap is still pretty cheap so I might buy 4 feet and wrap it around the box so it's ambient heat instead of direct.

    Heating element for fermentor box.

Awesome, thanks. I'm guessing these things pull very little in power so a relay like http://www.sparkfun.com/products/100 should work just fine, no?

    Heating element for fermentor box.

I would stick the bad on the wall not under it. I'm trying to make this cheap, the fermwrap seems pricey for two.

    Heating element for fermentor box.

I'm building a dual-fermentor box so I can control the temp for two beers at once and I have the cooling part down I just need some advice on the warming part. I thought about the fish tank heater but I would rather not have water in this thing so I've been looking at heating mats and bulbs...

    Tips for keeping things sanitized.

This was an issue while I was making my first batch, I would put the spoon down and it would touch something so I would end up throwing it back in my bucket of solution to sanitize it. How do you guys handle this, is it best to just make a bucket and leave your stuff in there? Does it hurt to...

    Measuring OG?

I feel like an idiot for not thinking of doing the measuring with water first and markin the bottle! I'll get a wine thief and some time of jar to do my tests in for future batches. Thanks. Would it be okay to let the wort sit while I wait for the sample to be tested? If the wort is still too...

    Measuring OG?

I just got done my first batch yesterday and my major issue was figuring out the initial OG. After taking the advice of other members I decided to ferment in my glass carboy but that brought up two new issues. How do I measure to exactly 5 gallons and how do I check the OG? I got around it by...

Brew Day! I have a few last minute questions.

I have one of those sticky termometers, should I stick that on the glass carboy? Is that pretty accurate as far as the liquid temp?

Brew Day! I have a few last minute questions.

Nice, okay, time to sterilize my glass one! :-) Couple more questions. - Does it hurt to let it ferment longer? Nothing crazy like months but 3-4 weeks instead of 2? - I live in Ma so we have about 2 ft of snow on the ground, can I bring my pot outside and just plop it in the snow to...

Brew Day! I have a few last minute questions.

I don't have a good termometer so I'm using my meat one. :drunk: Will this work, I basically just need to keep the temp around 155-170 while I'm steeping right? http://grab.by/8ph2
