Missing a Good Tasting Stout and Porter on My Recipes. What's Up?

I was going to say that you can probably back off the dilution to 80 percent looking at your numbers. Depends on how you get your RO. If it's the store, I'd back off then take the rest of the advice Yooper gave above. If it's from a home system, do what you wish. I'd do 80 or 90 still...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Thanks. Spent some more time reading through the thread and went for it. Seems to be the consensus that day 3 is about when everyone's ramps up. They're both up a few degrees and the stout seems to have picked up a little activity, though that's just by appearance at the top and the airlock...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Just dry hopped, day 3. I have a java stout in the fermenter using s-04 that is just about done. I'd like to ramp it up to 68 to see if I can coax another point or two from that before kegging. Anyone see an issue with the NEIPA using 1318 going to 68 at this point in fermentation? Krausen...

Chest freezer: to bypass (or not) the thermostat

I use an itc-1000 controller. Has internal relays for cooling and heating. For the hookup, you disconnect the 2 current temperature control and place one into each of the itc-1000 cooling circuit, per the wiring diagram they supply. Then you'll need power at pin 1 and neutral at pin 2. Tons...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

I've done the same with this beer, but at 5 gallons each. I used cascade at day 3 of fermentation. Think I used 2 ounces. I'd say that it was nice to have both. I basically had pale ales at both ends of the spectrum. If I was forced (at gunpoint) to dump one, it probably would have been the one...

    Steam Distillation of Hops

I'd guess that using an ethanol wash in an erlemeyer first, then filtering the debris off, then distilling most of the ethanol back out would result in a more thorough oil collection. If you do it now, you'll probably clean that residue from your condenser as well from the ethanol vapor, giving...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Fill it 1/4 full and leave it outside. Should freeze in a couple days. Add water the morning of brew day assuming it's still cold. By the time you are ready to chill, you should be able to add the pump. If it were me with no snow, I'd have another few gallons frozen in jugs or a bucket too in...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I run a 396 GPH aquarium pump out of a 18 gallon tote filled with snow, ice (I leave the water in there between brews) and water. Tote was 6 bucks or so and the pump was ~$20. I rigged a hose to go from that pump outlet to the garden hose adapter on my IC. Cools as effectively if not more than...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

So I guess this answers my question I had when I woke up... "Do I need a blowoff?". I figured I would, using 1318 at 1.064 OG. I'm at the fluffy white stage now. [emoji1]

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Brewed this up for the first time today, which was a bad idea. Not much went right... 1) There is a blizzard here. 2) Forgot to add a Campden tablet to strike water. This is what I'm most concerned about, I added it right after mash in, so hoping for the best. My water is only .83 ppm on...

Closed transfer from Fermonster/Big Mouth Bubblers

Also, I have a solution on the BMB with a spigot. I posted a crap version of it on the LoDO thread, but will post a better one saturday when I do my next transfer. The short sweet version is to jam 3/8 hose in the stem in the bottom portion of a 3 Piece airlock, with the other end on a barb...

Closed transfer from Fermonster/Big Mouth Bubblers

For the guys having trouble with their Big Mouth Bubbler universal lids coming off easy: Flip the gasket upside down. After doing that, the lid WILL NOT come off easily (read: don't plan on removing it with beer in there, or have a towel handy).

    Something weird.. electric shock.. help!!

Agree with everything mentioned here, good catch on the continuity check. Something I would do subconsciously, but may fail to mention as a reminder for others. To OP, to elaborate if needed, the sjoow/stow recommendation makes sure your connection cables stay flexible, while also remaining...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I wouldn't dump anything I brewed that came out with alcohol and a tolerable taste. Does that make me an alcoholic, or just "frugle"?

Getting hops out of wort and beer

I used a paint strainer bag as far as mesh goes. Mine clogged up too, but I found that just pulling one side of the bag up helped. Basically, your looking to expose a "fresh" area of bag. I did this into a 6.5 gallon bucket fermenter, but assume I could do the same for my big mouth bubblers...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Brewed this again a couple weekends ago (I really need to keep better records). So much better this time, much more pale ale like than my last, and I thought that one was good. I've improved my process a little, wondering if anyone has ideas about what made the hops come through much better...

Greenlee ruined my brew pot, looking at new kettles

All spot on, though brewing in the garage in Michigan isn't that terrible. I BIAB too, 17 gallons is just a little too small. I don't really brew 10 gallons of big beers usually, as I just won't drink those that quickly. If I wanted to age a big beer, personally I'd just make 2 batches, but...

Greenlee ruined my brew pot, looking at new kettles

I second this. 20 gallon pot and a burner, unless you are either A) Set up for 3 tier, B) Super content with extract after giving up all grain, C) Same as b, but partial mash. Burners are cheap, tell the wife it'll get you out of her kitchen. If that doesn't work, you need to start making...

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

That works, as long as you have more beer[emoji1] Read a few recent posts and figure I'll give the quick carb method I use I'm sure it's already somewhere in this thread but... Chill keg to serving temp, set regulator to 25psi and connect. Tilt keg so that it's on just an edge of the bottom...
