    Hydrometer readings

Thanks. I have 2 batches of JOAM in their 2nd week right now and I was going to pick up 2 more 1 gallon carboys to start some pumpkin spice & apple pie meads in hopes they will be ready for Thanksgivings. The 2 new batches will be the first I need to take readings on.

    Hydrometer readings

Newbie question for the experienced mazers - How do you take hydrometer readings on a 1 gallon batch? Do you pull some of the must out into a tube and then return it to the jug or just put the hydrometer into the jug and try to look through the side?

    Airlock blew off!!!

You can just not fill the bottle as much. From my reading it seems that you want to leave a few inches if you have fruit in your primary.

    4th mead - Pineapple/Mango

I'm too green to make any suggestions but I say to for at least a 1 gal batch and see what happens. Sounds like it should be good.

    Mead newbie's first batch

That's why I didn't heat it the first time. I mixed it with half the water warmed in a pan of hot faucet water and then shook the hell out of it for almost 10 minutes. It looked well mixed but separated out after about an hour.

    Mead newbie's first batch

Next time I think I'll heat the must a bit more. The honey separated almost right away. Also after thinking over the whole process I'll cut the orange into smaller pieces. I'm thinking getting the wedges out after racking should be a challenge.

    Mead newbie's first batch

Just started my first 1 gallon batch of Joe's Ancient Orange Mead. Now to wait a few months and see how it comes out.
