Oatmeal Stout Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout

Dumb question - I've had this in primary for 29 days today. Does it need a secondary, and if so for how long? If it doesn't need a secondary, can I keg it, purge the headspace, and store it in the garage until fridge space comes open?

    Legend Brown Ale Clone? (extract)

Thanks much! If this tastes anything like Legend's, I won't be able to keep my sister and her housemates away from it. Not sure I trust myself with liquid yeast yet, what do you think about using S-04?

    best/cheapest online store

I'm happy with my local shop, but I can't always get there, so going to cast a vote for Brewmaster's Warehouse -- great prices and fast shipping. Being able to purchase prepackaged grains through the Recipe Builder is a major plus.

    Legend Brown Ale Clone? (extract)

Looks like this was a few months ago -- any luck on fine-tuning the recipe? Was thinking an AG version of this with MO and S-04 could be spot on. Can't always get to Richmond to see my family (let alone make a beer run) and availability up north is inconsistent.

Said goodbye to an old friend

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My sheltie passed away two years ago after battling heart disease, and I still miss him terribly. It's tough to say goodbye to a very special family member and companion, so take the time to grieve - and don't let anyone tell you "it's just a dog". Keep the all...

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

I brewed an oatmeal stout, but didn't get to the APA. :S Anyhoo....We're game for this weekend for a Manassas meetup. Alternatively, any weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas should work with advance notice.

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

Hoping to get two batches done this weekend (don't know which), but need more kegs to avoid bottling what's already fermenting....

How do you feel about hummus?

You can also get bulk dry chickpeas (garbanzo) at middle eastern and indian grocery stores.

What pisses you off about other drivers?

DC area drivers are horrible, and it gets worse in NC, TN, and TX. Around here, pet peeves are mostly related to what my flight instructor used to call "getthereitis"....oh, I forgot the texters, rubberneckers, and peeps on crotch rockets who give bikers a bad name. Then again, while I was in...

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

Took the kayak out for a spin on the Occoquan when we lived in Woodbridge. I miss all the conveniences it now that we're on the other side of PWC...although I don't miss VRE one bit. Would definitely be game if there's enough interest.

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

Hate to necro this thread, but was wondering if this ever got off the ground? If not is anyone still interested? I thought the Hard Times recommendation was spot on. It'd be nice to meet other homebrewers, group brew, swap brews, or just try micros without driving an hour to Dulles or...

    growing hops in VA?

Also piggybacking. Going to try Centennial and Cascade in Richmond the spring and maybe Mt. Hood and Kent up here if I get brave.

All Grain with a French Press Coffee maker

It's a bit early yet...do I understand correctly that you could use any coffee-making device with grains as long as the grains are fine ground? And I like the idea of espresso machine shots!

Autumn Seasonal Beer Scary Balz Pumpkin Ale

Just racked the sweet potato. I think it's going to be pretty nice, but we went with 6# of sweet potatoes (thinking they would have more sugar than pumpkin) -- due to my low efficiency it would be reasonable to go up to 8# next time around. Hope I can leave it be long enough to age properly!

Never dump your beer!!! Patience IS a virtue!!! Time heals all things, even beer!

Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your story, Revvy. I almost dumped my 3rd batch, a dry stout poser, but every time I convinced myself to do it, this thread came to mind. So I eventually racked it to a spare carboy and let it sit another few weeks. The other day I found the bung had come...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Scary Balz Pumpkin Ale

Hoping to keg this and then brew a second batch (with pumpkin/sweet potato) tomorrow. We're planning to let it carb naturally instead of force carbing. The only two pumpkin brews that come close are Williamsburg's (assuming you let it sit for a few weeks first) and Vintage 50's. Will let you...

Thinking about going all-grain? DO IT!!!

How many extracts did you do first? What kind of burner are you using? Cost savings alone is enough to make me consider making the switch.
