    growing hops in VA?

I trained one of my Cascades yesterday, and today it grew about 3 1/2 inches. Is that typical?

    Post your top 3 fails

Screw ups? Thermometer whacked out mid-mash, resulting in a melted grain bag (didn't notice until the boil ), and lousy efficiency. Forgot to recalculate IBUs when rebrewing an extract recipe for the first time as a full-volume boil. Drinkable, but not what I wanted. Brewed an extract...

Score! 60 qt aluminum kettle $44.99

Hubby got me a 10 gallon for $35 yesterday...now wondering if we should've waited :(

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

We hadn't planned to bring OR drink anything, but having re-read GR8DA's post (ADD is a plague) I'm not sure the honor system is going to work here. We should start a sign-up or some sort...perhaps via Meetup.com or SurveyMonkey and a Facebook group (for those already using Facebook). It needs...

    Highly Recommend Great Lakes Hops

Huge, great quality plants and good prices. I'd recommend these over rhizomes any day. There was a mix up in my order and they responded quickly to make it right. Highly recommend.

    growing hops in VA?

How much do you have left, Halifax? Any chance you can cover them? ...nevermind. I should read members' profile before I post. Didn't realize you were on the commercial side of things. Hope you don't loose any additional plants.

    Measuring Beer in Kegs

Similar to the above. Pull the keg out for 2-3 minutes and read from the top of the condensation line.

    growing hops in VA?

My hops arrived yesterday, but I received the wrong order -- I have the worst luck. Guess I'll at least water/put them soil so they don't get too stressed while I'm waiting to hear back.

11th Annual Beer Festival in Norfolk

Sounds interesting, but the website doesn't have details aside from date/time. I'd at least like to see a list of breweries. Has anyone been before?

Hard to say - it's been a wild ride already.

Helles Bock MY Bock (Americanized Maibock)- Extract

Dumb question - how large is a "large starter"? All I have is a 1L flask.

Tips on keeping the Mrs. happy

Generally, this turns into a debate with my husband every time I try to pull a fast one...ack! When it comes to brewing we just don't see eye-to-eye on indirects and capital expenditures. That said, we recently went to an event charging $7 for short pours. We looked at each other, did a 180...

    growing hops in VA?

I'm near Haymarket. Just double-checked the two locations @ 2:25 and the south spot has had sun since just before noon; the westerly site has only had sun for 15-20 minutes. The difference in trellis height is 15' (south) vs ~20' (west). Additionally, the southerly spot sits directly under a...

    growing hops in VA?

Ah well, guess I'm just farther down the list. The plan is to pickup some of the white Lowe's buckets today or tomorrow. Figured I'd make skirts and cute signage (to ward off our busybody neighbors -- have zero interest in getting popped off by some wannabe vigilante). Seriously, my real...

    growing hops in VA?

Did you get the shipment notice? I can't wait! I saw a post from Original Gravity that used 5 gallon buckets as planters, and plan to give that a try.
