I shouldn't have tasted my hydrometer sample

I've tasted my OG samples on the couple I've done and never cared for them, but the finished product was awesome. Not sure why that everyone else likes it uncarbed.

    forgot to sanitize bottling bucket

Wait, hold on, so your not supposed to double up your bottling bucket as a camping latrine?

Broken floating thermometer in wort- Lead? Steel?

Gravity being what it is and all it would be nearly impossible to get glass in a beer this way unless you were really trying too. That being said swallowing some glass isn't really nearly as dangerous as you think. My son ate half a glass ornament from the Christmas tree and everything we...

    Made a mistake,fermentation too warm.

I believe the phrase is "relax, don't worry and have a home brew." :)

Does force carbing = lower ABV than using priming sugar?

so the practical answer is not really. :)

Just also noticed it does recipe/brew logging all together, kind of neat.

    Post your infection

This has been quite revealing. Honestly I don't know if this scares me or makes me feel safer. So many of those people said ended up fine.

    Journaling methods

Thanks for the responses, I really want to stay away from the notebooks though since my handwriting is so bad I can't even read it sometimes. So here's what I've been doing since I made the first post. I made a basic database in open office and a front end form. So far it's really simple but...

    Journaling methods

Of course I could probably find everything and anything I ever wanted to by searching since it's all probably already been said at least once, but then what would we have to talk about? Not to say I don't ever use the search, I normally do, but sometimes I want to hear responses from this year. :)

    Journaling methods

What method does everyone use for keeping a journal? I have been using a text file on my computer but that is quickly getting hard to navigate. I don't really want to use a spiral notebook either though.

What is wrong and how do I fix it??

Just out of curiosity, how could the mash tun be responsible for an infection? Short of it not even being washed out for weeks on end between uses any small infection it may have should get wasted in the boil, right? It was my understanding that sanitation really became key after the wort...

    Broken Floating Thermometer

I dug this up after my own thermometer break, figured I would add what I know/found. First if your thermometer is a blue liquid like mine was it is most likely dyed isoamyl benzoate which is also an artificial berry flavoring. Still check with the manufacturer but this is harmless. Second...

    All Grain Pilot Home Brewing

My first attempt at brewing was a 1 gallon all grain. I basically, without having read it first, did the easy stove top all grain method mentioned on this site. Lots of mistakes since it was my first time and it still turned out fantastic. I have made a temporary switch to extracts though...

Schlafle's brewery/Morgan St. Brewery St. Louis Visits

Living in St. Louis I've gotten to try a few. Of those listed this is what I think. O'Fallon Gold, didn't like it at all. Trailhead, ok, but not great. Schlafly however is still the best beer I've ever had. It is the beer that turned me onto real beer and remains a close favorite of mine. I...

How to dispose of trub? (pics)

Yeast is great for septic systems, I was told by my septic guy to not waste money on rid-ex or other products and just drop a packet of activerise yeast once a month. I've actually been wondering what the effects of a lager yeast would be, since the septic tank is underground it should sit at...

Sampled 2nd batch and bottled 3rd batch today.

Thanks for the tip IceFisherChris, I plan on doing DME for a bit and transitioning to some form of AG/partial mash/easy stovetop AG/etc. depending on what equipment I can come up with.

    labels??

So does anyone go so far as to label their beer? The second end of this would be that I don't buy empty bottles so they already have other peoples labels on them. Does anyone know a good way to get those off?

Sampled 2nd batch and bottled 3rd batch today.

This is an LME batch and I do detect that twang everyone talks about. I have another LME and then DME after that. Thinking of trying a partial mash for this weekend.
