Top off water in all grain

I would suspect that as long as you account for decreased hop utilization due to increased boil gravity, your final product should be pretty darn close to the full boil product.

    Wort Chiller Connections Help

I can't tell by looking at it, but it's either going to be 3/8" or 1/2" copper tubing (these are outer diameter measurements). If you don't know what size your plastic tubing is, just use a ruler or tape measure to determine how wide the copper tubing is. If you're looking to solder hose...

    Chlorine Free Bleach?

hopefully you are not trying to sanitize anything containing copper or brass? it's best to use Star-San for these, as the peroxides (and actual bleach) are bad for these metals.

Anybody reusing the vodka in their airlocks?

Left open to air, the ethanol in vodka will evaporate faster than the water...so by pouring your used vodka back into the bottle, you might be progressively lowering the strength of the vodka. If you have a kitchen scale that can measure grams, just take a known volume of the used vodka out of...

Immersion chiller upgrade tests, series vs parallel

yeah, I'm interested in how exactly you hooked up the water supply for series vs. parallel? Any supply restrictions would play a big factor in the efficiency of the parallel coils.

    Gravity Fed Immersion Chiller

Yes, water will go through the chiller with gravity alone. but my guess is that it'll take forever...plus the inconvenience of setting everything up and refilling the bucket a few times would be terrible in my opinion. I picked this pump up last month at Harbor Freight for $9.99. It's not on...

First all-grain batch, channeling, and the fix?

Yeah, with batch sparging channeling is not a concern...as long as you stir well with each water addition everything will be fine. Also, I do believe it's best to have the slots face down...otherwise you'll never be able to collect the bottom 1/4" or so of wort.

    Question about a copper manifold

I just built a 1/2" copper manifold (48 qt rectangular cooler) a few weeks ago, and I used a standard hacksaw to cut slots. I made the cuts every 1/2" on the long pipes only (Palmer's book said this spacing would be sufficient). As long as you have a good way of clamping the pipe down while...

    Water saving wort chiller

What about running the heated water exiting the chiller into your mashtun for the next batch? That way you can reuse the water, plus it's preheated and you'll save on fuel needed to heat the water.

WTB: 3-Liter Growler from Stone Brewery

I actually just saw one of these (Double Bastard) in a store in Cleveland a few weeks back. It was outrageously priced in my opinion ($89.99 for the 3 liter bottle). Not sure if it's still there. I'm only up there occasionally so I can't really buy/ship it right now...but if you're up for a...

Interview with Greg Hall Reading his response to the last question, it doesn't sound like he'll be brewing anywhere else... "I can’t really talk about what I’ll be doing for another month or so but it won’t be beer."

    WTB - Copper Immersion Chiller

Would either of these work? 3/8" x 20' ($13.48) or 3/8" x 50' ($43.96). These are both typically in stock at your local Home Depot...you could pick up either one, along with some vinyl tubing, and still come in under your $50 budget.

    Total Infection

In regards to the bleach, how old is the bottle you're using? Bleach has a limited shelf life...if the bottle is more than ~4-6 months old, or if it was stored in very warm temperatures, it's probably no longer strong enough to sanitize. Also, after you sterilize with bleach, are you rinsing...

    yeast shaker RPM

I work in a lab growing bacteria, and we always incubate/shake at 120 rpm (never magnetic stir bars). I would guess yeast would also do well at that speed.
