    Bourbon County Stout clone attempt

Now that's not something that had occurred to me... I could start with the half a fifth of Jim Beam my son found under the seat of his car the other day. Not a good place to keep it, but he's a responsible driver & drinker, just not at the same time.

    Bourbon County Stout clone attempt

Y'all are killing me with this thread. I picked up a 5 gallon bourbon barrel a couple months ago with plans to do a BCBS clone, and one thing after another keeps forcing me to put it off. The first distraction was a club competition where the brew was a random selection in a face off. Both my...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

I weighed in here when I broke my last one, so I bought another and a spare. Both are still going strong more than a year later. So, maybe you'll have luck with this strategy too.

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Don't let this dissuade you too much. There are a lot of happy users back to 2014.

    FastFerment conical fermenter??????

Yep they are trying to counteract some of the recent complaints I suspect. I was hesitant to say it out loud loud. Thanks for raising it.

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

Here's mine. I had some sprocket/chain issue, and it jumped off and jammed. That snapped off all 4 mounting posts for the plastic gear housing making it unusable on brew day. I put my battery drill on it, and continued while lamenting over the break. It was only the 2nd use. Rather than...

    Potentiometer help

How so what? If you are responding to my last post, reversing the leads could damage the fan. Most DC fans are brush less and have electronics to make the motor work. That's why they have a red and black leads. If you reverse the leads it will probably fry it. If its turning the wrong way flip...

How to add permanent volume markings to a kettle (illustrated)

Many modern small electronics chargers may not be up to the task as they put out very little power. You're basically shorting out the supply through the solution, and their output voltage probably drops to near zero as soon as you you 'complete the circuit'. The 12v charger puts out AMPS vs...

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

I have a 1/2 HP garage door opener that runs at a similar speed, and have yet to have any issues, except when a piece of metal got in it from a fresh batch of grain. Stopped it dead and jammed the rollers so tight I had to take it apart to free it. Fortunately it did not damage the motor/plastic...

    Potentiometer help

That might not be 100% effective, as they are designed to turn only 1 way, and could have electronics in it. Turn the fan over.

    Shipping to competitions discussion

Hmm, good point. They weight it before the postage is applied, but the little sticker matters not. We're printing half sheet labels, and they weight almost .1 oz. A new guy took over at one of the local post offices, and he goes by the letter of book, as does the one in my town. The other...

    Shipping to competitions discussion

Sure would be nice if we could ship USPS. Maybe some day they will realize that shipping homebrew to competitions is not worthy of federal prosecution. They complain they can't compete and make money, yet they severely restrict what you can ship, make you stand in line endlessly to ask...

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

Yeah, so am I. Except I failed on the dimensions, that was the Oring. I should have realized the OD was way off. My silicon gasket is 5.875 x .125. Still way thicker than the foam thing.

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

Hmmm, odd. I don't see any details on their site about the gasket other than 35mm OD and 3.5mm thick. This matches the silicon one. The foam is 1mm on a humid day, at best. Mine locks into the lid perfectly. I got it from love2brew.com

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

In the context of the FF, the seal is expected so that ALL air in/out passes through the airlock, not to seal the conical. These are not rated for pressure, and with the exception of a clogged airlock, it's not going to pressurize even with the lid sealed. Clogged airlocks will self resolve at...

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

Y'all really need to check out the other thread I posted about already. That thread has been going on almost since the Fast Ferment was announced not quite 2 years ago, and just about every issue, and resolution, has been covered, as well as features, upgrades, stands, temperature control...

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

Tbe foam ones are the original ones. Tbe silicon are the new ones. This thread has all the history and lots of good FF info. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=478906

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

I'm a little late to the discussion, but these fermenters work very well. Did you leak test it before you used it the first time? Seems not. There are 2+ years worth of discussions on HBT about this fermenter, and how to fine tune it. Given the cost, you can't expect High End performance. The FF...
