    TRAPPIST-1 exoplanet system

Sorry to burst the Trappist beer bubble... "named for The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile" but maybe not too much of a stretch since the letters don't quite fit directly.

    Northern Brewer

Yep, happened to me several years ago too. I've long since moved on to other suppliers.

What came in the mail for you today?

A bigger box for my electric control.

Let's see your furry brew buddy!

Here's our newest family member Luna. A rescue puppy and shes gonna be a big girl. We'll have to see if she makes brew buddy status. Right now she's in the steal everything mode.

    Soldering Stainless steel

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't imagine there would be any real concern.

    Yes, siphoning literally sucks

I'm of the same opinion here. I rarely have an issue with transferring but always seem to make a mess post x-fer. The best solution I've found is to leave it in the <insert your vessel here> and take it to the sink where the inevitable spill/splash/drops can be contained. For me the vessel has...

    Yet another spa panel question

This may actually be a violation as well. You could overload the 20a receptacle and not trip the 30a breaker. Re-wire with a 4 wire circuit and 'it will be beautiful'. Yes, the 4th wire (white) would be to the neutral bus.

    Yet another spa panel question

If the wires to the plug are 10 awg then you are fine with a 30 amp plug or connection to your 30a panel. If it's 12 awg then you have to change the wire, as it would probably be a code violation (and safety). You can't switch to 4 wire unless there is an unused neutral wire in place. If not...

    Soldering Stainless steel

Breathing some life into this thread here...I'm surprised with the popularity of soldering stainless it's faded away. I have an all electric setup, and I'm planning to re-do my immersion chiller with smaller twin coils to get the IC lower in the kettle, one on each side of the element. My...

    I don't think I like pork chops...

I've always enjoyed pork chops, but I can agree that they can be pretty dry at times. The last few times I've done them it was the thickest boneless ones I could find. I split them in half, but not through, stuff them with bread crumbs, onion, celery and spices, stand with the cut side up...

    14G FastFerment Presale

As an owner of pre-sale original FF 7 unit I'd say you are on the right track here. A few thoughts - Why is the sampling port still an aftermarket option? That was one of the first things I did to mine then it came up here on HBT. I later changed mine to the push button spigot I removed from my...

What do you do with your spent grains?

My understanding is that they have a high protein content left.

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

I have been using only a 4" muffin fan with great success. I found out by accident that it will warm the chamber when I just intended to circulate the air. It's rated at 24w of power consumption, most of which is generated heat. My chambers are 1.5" foam insulated and sized to just fit a carboy...

    3-Prong 220v-only vs 4-prong 120v/220v

Most switches that are rated at 120v are also rated for 208/220/240. Check the specs for sure. Nearly every part you might consider using is either rated for both voltages, or available in both. Since you have all the parts you need already, and don't plan any changes there is little motivation...

So do diy my setup or just go with the unibrau

Don't short change the circuit you plan to install. 30 amps is pretty low for an electric system. 50 seems the most popular due to the availability of gfci spa panels that are cheaper than a 50 amp gfci alone. I tapped into my electric range circuit to run mine, but it's only 40 amps. I had to...

    Immersion Wort Chiller Cooling Time

I did a double brew on Monday, batch 1 was only 5.25 gal (@1.105), and had it to about 80 in under 10 minutes using about 12gal of tap water (55ish). Batch 2, 6 gal, took way longer and used a lot more water. Seems I forgot to turn off my boil element, doah! My IC is a double coil 1/2" x 50'...

What I did for beer today

Brewed an imperial stout, used second runnings with another 10lbs of pale malt for a dark doppelbock, and second second runnings for 7 qts of starter wort.
  20. jleiii

What is your next brew to brew?

Barrel aged imperial stout, and hopefully a dopplebock with the second runnings as strike water in a second mash.
