How often should I take a sample....

i generally leave it till I don't notice it bubbling so much any more, and then take a sample. I keep that sample for a couple of days so I can see if the gravity changes at all, if it doesn't then I bottle. Course I taste the sample a bit too... but basically i open the fermenter as little as...

Brew going bad after bottling - help!

I suspect he's in the UK then, Castor Sugar is used in baking a fair bit, it's very fine sugar, but still crystals, not powder. For what it's worth, I use raw cane sugar (brown) for bottling and have never had a problem. K

    Curious about occupations

I formulated my hypothesis based on my past experience of being involved in the Windsurfing Club during my college days. Year in year out, the vast majority of the members that would join up would be from "that" (my) end of the campus. The Business/Law/Arts/etc faculties would never seem to take...

    boiling beer

I presumed they were all being sarcastic, not wrong! doh! But beer DOES put out the flames on a BBQ though, if that helps.... Only use stuff like coors light, bud, miller or something useless like that though!

    Why brewers yeast?

Might not - course this could be all rubbish: http://www.vitaminuk.com/pages/articles/brewersyeast.htm "Brewers Yeast is known as nature’s wonder food, a name that it certainly deserves. It is an excellent source of all the major B vitamins (except B12). It also contains other...

    Don't ask me why, but....

An no you've got it all wrong. Exercise and then have a beer. It'll only take one or two then, cos you absorb it straight away. That way your batch of brew lasts MUCH longer!

    Why brewers yeast?

My local health food shop sells a tub labelled "Brewers Yeast". I have never tried to brew with it though - I think they sell it as a dietary supplement or something. Couldn't imagine ever using it for beer though.... or could it be used??

    Went Fishin

Yeah and bloody Dublin is like the 12th most expensive city to live in. It's rediculous. Starbucks just opened a store in Dublin (first in Ireland) last week. It's EUR4.55 for a grande mocha. Thats $5.50 or so! Go to the cinema and it's like being raped when you get popcorn and drink. A...

solution for capping euro neck bottles

I regularly cap both styles of bottle lip as posted by mrzud a few posts up. I thought that my capper wouldn't cap the ones on the right, but it does. I prefer the ones on the left though as they're slightly easier to cap.

    Went Fishin

Yeah I figured they were reasonably generic, but had never heard of "aggie" before. We have Kerrymen jokes in Ireland, for people from the county of Kerry, in the Southwest. you could probably adapt them. E.g. What do you call a Kerryman under a wheelbarrow? A mechanic. What do you call a...

    Complete Newbie

No matches at the moment, we're in preseason (it's summer here see, though sometimes you'd never know by looking out the window ;)). There's a couple of autumn internationals against the AllBlacks and some others, and the Celtic League and Heineken Cup should be starting up soon.... K

the top one would do you fine, and save a load of money. the only difference is the capper. I have a 2-handed capper and it works fine. if you're looking to get into it, I'd try the cheaper one and see how it goes, you can always get more if you like it. K

    Don't ask me why, but....

oh I figured that I wasn't missing anything, just curious how come Coors Light are so big into their marketing over here, but nothing about regular coors. Don't drink bud/miller/coors light anyway, so coors wasn't even going to get a tasting.

    Re-capping Heineken bottles

yea mine looks similar ish but it's black. it's not a big deal though cos I'll only ever bother with the 33/50cl bottles (don't like beer getting too warm/flat). Did you ever notice that the bottles have a number printed on the base sometimes - I've seen 51 mm 44 mm 41 mm and so on - I dunno...
