    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

I had a pork butt and a bunch of chicken wings ready for the smoker today. Unfortunately, life had other plans for me so they'll go into the freezer for a later smoking date.

    Homemade Bread Thread

Made peanut butter bread from an old 1932 recipe. Tastes great, like a less-sweet peanut butter cookie with the texture of banana bread. Definitely a dessert bread, great with some butter or jam on it, or eaten on it's own.

What did I cook this weekend.....

Wish I had some better finished shots, but we made pierogi last night for National Pierogi Day. Not something I had much growing up aside from the boxes of frozen Mrs. T's pierogi, but my father-in-law is Polish so we have them at least once a year there. First time I've made them myself at...

    Chicken wings are a production!

Very nice! I have a bunch of wings that are going on the smoker on Monday. Trying the smoked-then-fried method for the first time.

Bought the wrong water Distilled with minerals added for taste

Both Walmart stores local to me still carry distilled water in 1 gallon jugs, they're in the aisle with the bottled water.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed an NEIPA yesterday with Galaxy, Amarillo, and Cascade. Pitched A38 Juice last night and it's happily bubbling away right now.

The Venting Thread: Let It Out, Folks!

It frustrates me that I don't actually have a LHBS. I'd gladly support one over online retailers, but our closest shop is 1 hour away and I can't justify 2 hours of my time plus $10+ in gas when MoreBeer has free shipping over $60 and I don't even have to leave town.

what do you guys do with a bad batch?

As Deadalus mentioned, it's great slug bait for the garden and such. I'm actually going to put some beer out this afternoon after I found tons of slugs on my horseradish leaves yesterday. Life is too short to drink bad beer. We're not garbage disposals. I wouldn't eat moldy food simply because...

    I made this!!!

All grain doesn't have to be expensive. If you're brewing on the stove top you can brew smaller BIAB all grain batches with all your existing equipment, you'll just need a BIAB bag for mashing. My beer quality and interest in the whole brewing process multiplied significantly when I made the...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just started a yeast starter with A38 Juice for another NEIPA on Friday, and likely brewing a keptinis either Saturday or Monday.

    Amazon Hops

My experience with most Amazon shipping problems has been due to USPS (terrible!) rather than Amazon itself. I'm surprised they rely on them so heavily for a multi-billion dollar company.

    Power usage

Ultimately, time is our only finite resource. I can always make more money or find the energy to do stuff, but time is limited.

    Amazon Hops

I've ordered 1oz packs of hops or a single pound of grain from Amazon when I was just short on a recipe. Hard to beat 2-day shipping. I've also bought a pump, floating dip tube, tons of disconnects and picnic taps, and some of my Intertap stuff from Amazon.

    Keeping the other half happy

Also a good point! Plenty of time to get some household chores done during the mash or boil. The only time I'm really "babysitting" my brew is during chilling and transferring to the fermenter. I typically start my brew days early in the morning (5-6am) which also helps since most of the brew...

    Wheat beer: coriander/orange peel input?

Grinding whole coriander is the way to go, though I've only used sweet orange peel (never used bitter). My last 4 gallon batch of a Blue Moon-ish clone had 0.5oz each of fresh ground coriander and sweet orange peel. I felt the coriander level was good and there was a bit of orange aroma, though...

    HELP WITH A STOUT.

Irish stouts will tend to be on the dry side. You could try to backsweeten with lactose boiled in water, though I would probably just drink it as is and look at recipes for milk stout/sweet stout for your next brew.

What do you do with the spent grain (from your mash)??

Besides dry leaves, another big one that I was missing for a long time was shredded paper. We used to throw out or recycle tons of paper until I bought a $30 shredder from Walmart and started shredding whatever I could. I didn't realize how much paper we were tossing before that. Shredded...

    Keeping the other half happy

The #1 thing for me to keep the wife happy was setting up a room in the basement strictly for brewing. All the mess and smell is out of the kitchen, and I also don't need to carry stuff up and down the basement stairs. The only thing I still occasionally do in the kitchen is a yeast starter...
