So much energy expended. I mean it not like any of this thread is going to change the way any of us brew. Give the guy a break - he’s not trashing anyone.
Beer smith only calls for two gallons sparge, it's usually spot on but I always prep 4 gallons. I won't brew this until late in the month, my fermenters are full and I have an Oatmeal Stout queued up.
I’ve used this once or twice before:

No harm in trying if your beer is aged and...
You roped me in @RePete, entering into Beersmith. I'm looking at a few adjustments on the grain bill:
1) Color was super high, so I dropped the roasted barley and chocolate malt contributions - still at 51.3 SRM
2) Subbed 2 lbs of pale DME for 3 lbs of 2-row (Robobrew capacity limit)
3)...
Plus I duct tape the mash handle holes (Reddit user already called it out as unsanitary or toxic, but I keep doing it). I‘ve subbed DME For base malt on a couple recipes with decent results, definitely want to try an imperial stout!
Yes true and I wasn't trying to imply it was helpful in a sparge. I always sparge with my Robobrew, usually in the neighborhood of 2.5-3 gallons, mash pipe raised and pump off. I also believe that recirculation during mash has the potential to extract more sugars.
Yes, the mash concept is the same, plus most have an integrated pump for recirculating and racking - very nice convenience, and electronic temperature control, which is effective at maintaining the mash temperature.
I’ve never brewed extract so I can’t compare notes on that. I evolved my hop schedules over many brews, adjusting for taste, etc. There’s tons of discussion about hop efficiency that I’ve yet to jump into and I doubt I have the best efficiency :-). Also I’m not trying to distract from the water...
I don’t have a strong opinion on this and am aware a lot of BIABers don’t sparge (including my son). To your point, @LittleRiver, You should be able to tailor your process and recipes and get good results.
Thoughts on your hop schedule. I’m a hop head and use between 10 and 16 oz on my IPAs. You’re using 6 oz total. I’ve got a couple recipes where I add 0.4 oz magnum at boil 60 for a nice bitterness. That could have a big impact compared to your centennial at 45 (although not flavor or aroma). If...
My gut feel is that most of these systems are similar, with minor quirky differences. At the time I bought my Robobrew, only the Grainfather was available at more than 2x the cost (I couldn’t justify it). I bought mine through Williams Brewing and they've provided excellent support. If I...
Heres an interesting article on sparge vs no sparge: Sparge VS No Sparge - Grainfather Community
“CONCLUSION:
The no sparge beer takes [sic] a big hit on efficiency when compared to the sparged beer and when given to a panel of tasters the majority were able to identify the difference and...
Hard to tell from the website pics - they look the same. I'm not beholden to Jaded - they're not good at connecting, the transaction was impersonal with minimal communication / update. I like the product though (Jaded Scilla), been using it for 1 1/2 years. Very durable. I always have 5 gallons...
